Post-ARTPOP: Back to Stefani Germanotta!

Without further ado, I present to you a statement from Joe Vulpis, producer of the Stefani Germanotta Band's 2006 EP's Words and Red and Blue, included in Maureen Callahan's Poker Face: The Rise and Rise of Lady Gaga:

'"She really wanted to be the bad girl rocker," Vulpis says. They'd do "stripped-down rock, bad-girl rock, big power ballads, jazz standards." She covered torch songs like "Someone to Watch Over Me" and Nat King Cole's "Orange Colored Sky."'

Doesn't it strike you that post-ARTPOP she seems to want to reconnect to these early aspirations, both emotionally (coming to terms with trauma's that occurred in this period) and professionally? And not just with music, but also with acting (which we know she pursued in this same period)?

And remember what she said in 2014:

"I feel like I came in through pop music but I never really belonged there." (SXSW)

Doesn't it strike you that she's equating her avant-garde fashion with emotional turmoil, stating that now (i.e. 2015-16) she's feeling a lot more grounded, emotionally stabile, resulting automatically in toned down outfits?

Do you think Gaga is trying to come to terms with early life experiences by retracing her career steps?

Do you think she is then acknowledging that she, possibly under (emotional) pressure, changed her style and sound, now observed as a mistake at worst or a deviation from her true self at best?

Do you think this has anything to do with RedOne's (non-)involvement on LG5?

How do you imagine this will affect the future of Gaga's career?

Discuss!

This fanbase is stuck on the idea that she is nothing without pop, and even MORESO nothing without RedOne produced tracks, but they completely ignore artists like Madonna who completely reinvented themselves, and came out with critically acclaimed albums that went on to tell millions of copies from producers who didn't make their earlier hits.

Lady Gaga is an incredibly gifted musician, I won't even bother listing her achievements and resume, and I have complete faith that she recorded stuff with RedOne and said "No, this isn't good enough for the next stage of my career"

Swan Heart

A badass, rock n roll chick, wearing only her bikini, taking her bra off and singing jazz standarts and overemotional ballads is basically what Gaga is made for.

So here for it.

They say it's the last song. They don't know us, you see. It's only the last song if we let it be.

I remember I had a theory that Gaga actually started her pop career as a way to "laugh at pop culture" in how quick she can become famous using her crazy antics. When she became so big, she kind of figured: "Oh well, lemme just continue".

Basically, she used pop music to do what she really wanted to do all along.

I'm starting to feel I was correct, even though it might be ridiculous.

I just don't think her love for pop was ever that genuine...

The Surrealist

I always thought 'Lady Gaga' is just a stage persona she created to cope with anxiety and depression. A superhero who is perfect, mysterious and fun. But Gaga has given us so much Insight, that I cannot believe this persona anymore.

She is Stefani Germanotta, a jazz loving rockstar who wants to change the world trough music. So I hope some day Stefani is brave enough to let Gaga die. (it almost thought that would've happen on iTunes Festival when she was about to perform Swine and took off her wig. The human underneath the wig. #Burqa #Aura)

The and Rise of Lady Gaga.

Follow up: The Fall and fall of Lady Gagz

I'm just so curious of what she is doing, i've been in this position, changed it back, etc a never ending cycle.

I'd say, regarding this, she seems to have a moment in her life where she had a personality disorder. Something that is consistent with her thing for fantasizing, lies or many half-trues, probably being Lady Gaga. So it seems that she might have felt the need to remember who she was.

I'd say moments like PokerFace, JustDance and so on were a phase. It was sincere, she invented something but it's not really her forever. But i believe she always wanted to be a popstar, deep down. She seems like that rock fan that loves the catchy tunes and was obssessed with it, at least when young.

It would have, probably, been smarter if she had a new character for each era. Maybe..so she could ditch and move on.

It makes her happy and she wouldn't turn down the opportunity to sing with one of her idols?

The question involving red one is interesting. Did she believe that releasing the music they created would push her deeper back into the "pop princess" title she's (possibly) trying to get past? Which could maybe explain why she scrapped the single.

Ive always seen Gaga as a rocker/metal head. It's just that it's easier to break through with what's catchy. I believe she really does want to be "Stefani" again, but she's afraid. Idk I love her both pop and rock personas. I wish she didn't feel pressured to stick to one thing.

On a very superficial level (and not exactly answering your question) I believe it's just the next step in her career. Whatever she did with ARTPOP in those final stages will always remain an enigma to me. I'm definitely not one to cling on to nostalgia or overvalue what might have been, because I know it can be deceiving. However, every single iTunes festival performance or demo of ARTPOP, blows the final version out of the water. The scrapped version of ARTPOP or what I imagine it sounded like, would have been a sensible follow-up to Born This Way.

It might be naive but I do believe her record label is partly to blame for ARTPOP's final version. Insofar, her contacting RedOne after ARTPOP made absolutely no sense to me. For an artist who is constantly trying to reinvent herself taking the safe path by attempting to emulate her previous sound and success, is a setback and a disappointment for anyone who's been paying attention to her since the beginning. And I believe that that's Gaga's biggest forte, being able to enchant an audience that has been meticulously following every step of her career, instead of offering volatile and fleeting entertainment for casual listeners.

But as to whether she's "trying to come to terms with early life excperiences", I have no idea. However, it does seem too early for her to try and come full cirlce. I do hope, however, that we get to see a less manufactured Gaga, who doesn't overthink and second-guess every single one of her career choices.

We all know that 'Stefani' is a rocker at heart. But this guy is talking about her when she was about twenty. If she had decided to go the "piano rock" (is there even a genre called that?) route I doubt, no...am convinced, she wouldn't be even a fraction as successful as she is today. You'd have to go to cheap bars on Lower East Side to watch her sing in bad 80's rocker spandex to listen to her! And you'd probably wouldn't even enjoy her.
