kvnrp 48,353
If you have no idea what's going on here: Building your own gaming PC with very good performance just got waaay cheaper. AMD announced today it's new Radeon RX 480 graphics card for 200 USD, which compets in the mainstream segment of the market, where AMD sees much higher chances and an actual market, other than in the high-end, which is currently owned by NVIDIA with it's new GTX 1080. While the 480 doesn't really compete with the new 1080, according to AMD, it offers more performance than a GTX1080 in the game Ashes of the Singularity when two RX480 run in paralell, which still costs less than one 1080 alone. And it still offers enough performance for VR with headsets like the HTC Vive. From PCWorld:"In a livestream from Computex in Taipei, AMD announced that the Radeon RX 480 will be the first graphics card based on its forthcoming Polaris graphics processors. And get this: The Radeon RX 480 stands ready to deliver performance equivalent to what today’s $500 graphics cards offer, as first reported in the Wall Street Journal earlier today. That’s roughly in line with the Radeon R9 390X, GeForce GTX 980, or air-cooled Radeon Fury." Specs as unveiled by AMD at the launch event: It goes on sale on June 29th. The next console generation (PlayStation 4.5 , Xbox One Slim and the Nintendo NX) are rumored to launch with similiar graphic chips by AMD. So 1080p 60 FPS might finally be a reality on consoles. I may upgrade my PC with it The price/performance is insane Spoiler This is me rn (credit to /u/iop90) I just saw the thread about the GTX 1080 launch here, and I thought why not post this ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Sunny 12,735
buying the 8gb one ngl Also NX is also set to have 60fps just at a lower resolution (I think they said it could be 1080, idk why it's lower tho) I like dancin', and ponies....

Nintendo is usually really good at optimising their games for their consoles.

Hoping they could hit 4K (even though my TV isn't 4K ), can't wait to buy it Zelda U would look amazing in 1080/60fps, but think about 4K I like dancin', and ponies.... Everyone laughed at Nintendo for not supporting HD at all on the Wii, and with the NX they could be like: "You can play games in 1080p now? That's cute, here's Zelda in 4K" Spoiler I lowkey hope that this would be the case tbh

Only once they didn't, 3.5 , and they got called out by everyone for it. gurl Unlike AMDs processors for now, their graphics cards are actually pretty good, it's just that drivers up until maybe 2015 sucked and nvidia pays game developers a lot of money to not optimise for AMD at all (just like Intel did back in the mid 2000s when AMD was winning big in CPUs). My Radeon R9 270 (which is a not very high end card) is suddendly competing with a GTX 950 (which came out about four years later than the original version of the 270) just because things for which AMD planned for in 2012 are finally happening (like DirectX 12 in Windows 10), at the expense of performance in games until DX12 came out. Other than Nvidia, AMD is acutally future-proofing their products; the GTX1080 seems to still not be supporting DirectX 12 fully although basically all future games will be built with it. And AMD is actually supporting Linux, which Nvidia doesn't at all and everyone hates them for that. Nvidia does some shady-ass buisness (just as much as Intel tbh) and we do need some real competition and the only one who could pull that off is AMD Spoiler I don't want this to turn into a fanboy war

Not being well optimized doesn't mean it's not "fully" there, lol. I'd rather have a card that doesn't feel crippled when running the latest games at max and without setting my room on fire tbh, than have full DX12 support for now. But I wish you a happy time with Ashes of Singularity if DX12 is your fetish. it wasn't laaaahv

I just want a future proof product that I can use in 5 years from now and still get good support instead of spending 500-700 € for a graphics card which lasts me just a year My four year old 270 is going quite nicely, playing everything in 1080p and hitting good framerates with minor tweaks in the settings, so I can't really complain
