However by saying that Gaga usually exceeds the standards of pop music, specially if you pay attention to pop music, Gaga by default is not generic. Some of her songs aren't. A lot of them are though. Even within her genre she has been getting some major competition lately. Think of Grimes for instance. Not saying this to criticize her, I just think it's weird when fans of Gaga try to paint Katy and Gaga as completely different artists (where their finished musical products are concerned), the one super innovative and avant-garde and the other bland and generic. That's just not possible.

That's just not possible. The thing is that some of her most generic songs, like some from the TF and TFM were released at a time when their sound was new and fresh at least in the US. Is only now that you look back at them that you see that they were great but simple songs. So she does keep some lever of mainstream in her music, but she usually incorporates a lot of new ideas. By doing this she doesn't sound generic as someone like Katy or Selena Gomez.

ItsTommyBitch 12,640
All of this Gaga-exceptionalism reminds me of America 私自身もこの世の中も誰もかれもが, どんなに華やかな人生でも, どんなに悲惨な人生でも, いつかは変貌し, 破壊され、消滅してしまう. すべてがもともとこの世に存在しない一瞬の幻想なのだから

Creyk 18,059
The guy is trying to tweet but his tweets are not coming through It seems like Katy's team got to him so he can't leak any more. A shame, because he had 6 more full songs.

I actually don't agree. i think fans have made up this story in their mind about how Gaga's music was fresh and current back in 2008-10 but that's not how it happened. Critics readily dismissed Gaga's first singles as uninspired formulaic pop with huge throwbacks to the 80's and 90's, even if they eventually praised them for being so catchy and memorable. Her music was explicitly compared to that of Rihanna and the damn Pussycat Dolls in the beginning. Now everyone knows I love TF to absolute death, but even then I'll say that because it's just the truth. Katy has always been equally "fresh and current", and in 2008 she made the splash she did exactly because, like Gaga, she had a clearly recognizable sound, in contrast to Gaga a lot more pop rock inspired. Now obviously I'll prefer Gaga's music over Katy's, but that was not what I was talking about, I was talking about how I find it a bit silly to pretend there's such an enormous difference between their music. Like I said, both compared to a truly avant-garde non-pop artist (or even a pop artist like Grimes), they both look generic.
TimisaMonster 31,073
I don't imagine they were any better tbh....why put out the worst song of the batch first? Well, equally as many people(DJ and artists) have praised Gaga's early works for pushing dance and EDM to the mainstream. And sure Katy and Gaga re not completely different, but there is still a very noticeable difference between them.
