Did you expect Cheek To Cheek to be a success like it is?

Mister Gaga

I expected the christmas specials, TV performances, maybe the gold certification.

But (almost) surpassing ARTPOP sales, more than 1.2M copies sold WW for a jazz album, the Grammy award and the countless awards that came with it? Never. And let's be real: without C2C, the oscars medley and even the nomination in 2016 wouldn't exist.

It's a collab album and most of the sales probably came from Tony Bennett's fans so I don't consider that as achievement :)

I got a kick out of the people who said "it was only as successful as it was because it was Tony Bennett."

Then The Silver Lining came out and sold like 4,000 copies and

Spoiler

Not me sounding like I'm trying to shade granddaddy T

I didn't think it'd sell as much as it did but I knew the critical acclaim was coming and that's more important :hor:

No. I figured the first week sales would be good, but I did not expect such longevity.

This!

I knew it was going to be successful soon after it's release, just not that it would have such longevity and long term success.

I thought she was working on cheek to cheek 2.0 like 3 years ago. When is it supposed to be released?

You forgot to mention the Super Bowl. That was a much bigger deal than the Oscars and I doubt they would invite her to sing the National Anthem if it wasn't for CTC. Also, it debuted with 131k which is probably more than 90% of what most of pop girls debut with today. That's very impressive considering it's a Jazz album full of covers.

Jazz is more popular than many pop fans realize.  I watched the show when Tony appeared on MTV "unplugged".  It was just him and his traditional jazz trio.  The MTV crowd was in the audience, yet he did not pander to the rock/pop fans, he only sang the jazz standards like he did on C2C.  It had rave reviews, the young crowd loved it, and an album was made from the show.   "The album reached platinum record status in the United States and won the 1995 Grammy Awards for Best Traditional Pop Vocal Performance and Album of the Year."

Just shows that jazz can be popular with all ages.

I live outside the space time continuum.

I knew it was great when she played a couple of songs from the album for the group backstage at the ARTPOP Ball.  Just the week before this concert in Seattle she had finalized the album with Tony and was super high and excited by how well it had turned out.  She was dancing around the room and singing to the record playing I Can't Give You Anything But Love, and we were speechless and blown away.  Then we clapped and cheered and she was like in her baby voice going "Do you guys like it?"  We f***ing loved it.    whether you like jazz or not.  How can you not like it.  Somebody said they thought it would go to no. 1 ( in the jazz world), and I remember saying (kissing her ass) it'll get a grammy.  I couldn't believe it when it happened.  I went to 2 C2C concerts.  They were great.  I did the Hollywood Bowl front row thing.  Unbelievable......That particular concert in Seattle was electric and wonderful and I think it's because she was so excited by this C2C album.  So I am glad for it.

Yes, because many times I have heard people were saying, "She have great voice, too bad her genre and gimmicks overshadows her talent" or something along that line.

People appreciate talent and amazing singing voice is something you can't buy. You can learn how to.play piano or guitar, but one can't always be a great vocalist. And they know Gaga have it and they wanted to hear more, and Jazz is a great vessel for her to do that.

It is not too dramatic as an Opera and it got so many listeners from around the world, and Jazz as genre are very muchly well respected because everything in it are very technical, a great street cred.

For big fans like you and I, we knew from early on that she will killing these Jazz verses, but to people out there, it's a revelation, they finally get what they want, Gaga and her voice, stripped down.

That is foolish notion, she can make people outside of her genre warm up and sit down to listen to her, expanding her reach, is already achievement of her own. They can always boycotting the records but tgey didn't cos Jazz listeners are mostly not childish like that.
