Sexually abused Dutch woman granted euthanasia

Papers published recently by the Dutch Euthanasia Commission reportedly revealed that a woman in her twenties was allowed to go ahead with assisted suicide based on psychiatrists' decision that her mental health condition was "insufferable," and it was therefore illegal to deny her life-ending drugs.

The woman, who has not been identified, was sexually abused between the ages of 5 and 15, according to Britain's Independent.

Multiple reports cited the documents published by the Commission as stating the post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) the woman suffered due to the abuse was "incurable," enabling the approval under Dutch law of her request for euthanasia.

The Telegraph reports that the young woman was not an isolated case, and in fact, the rate of approved assisted suicides in the Netherlands for patients suffering from mental disorders has increased dramatically since the procedure was first made legal.

In 2010, only two people were granted euthanasia due to "insufferable" mental conditions, while The Telegraph said that number rose to 56 in 2015, according to the documents released by the Commission.

The title made me think a woman got euthanized for being sexually assaulted.

But its her choice.

How horrific that someone could commit an act on someone that would damage them to the point of wanting to die.

Awful.

That's really sad :( the whole "right to die" thing pulls me in several directions but in the end, I'd agree someone with an incurable illness should have the right to end their own suffering. It's infuriating that she was put through that in the first place though.

Whimsical bitch

Is this even a real story? Because form as much i know you can only request euthanasia when you're 100% mentally healthy and you are physically incureable. Therefore this woman can't have had ethanasia because she was not physically sick but mentally sick. So that makes this illegal. There could have been a chance in law of course.

Hmmm idk. But I've seen other articles discussing euthanasia for people with mental disorders in The Netherlands.

Well i'm dutch and the euthanasia law has always been presented as this in news, papers etc. It's also quite obvious that mentally ill people can't get euthanasia.

If its illegal than the psychiatrist can recommended whatever he/she wants but that won't chance the law. If it's illegal than it's illegal. To my knowledge there's no such thing as a law that ethanasia is legal for mental pacients when their psychiatrist recomment it. But again i could be wrong.

I saw this on BBC as well but idk what to believe. I mean reputable news sources have reported this.

The psychiatrist was the one who helped this patient go through with it..... but then idk how it was deemed legal then.
