Bar owners in New York told they cannot deny service to pregnant women

If a pregnant woman wants to belly (or bump) up and enjoy a drink that is her decision to make and no bar owner should take it upon themselves to try stop her, a new advisory issued by New York City is making clear.

The admonition to bar tenders, bouncers and club managers in all five boroughs to not even think about turning with-child customers away was contained in a wider set of guidelines that mostly deal with protections and rights for pregnant women in the workplace.

At the moment, bars in New York are required nonetheless to display signs that warn of the risks   of harm to a fetus from alcohol consumption.  But armed with that information pregnant women should be left alone to make up their own minds whether to drink, the guidelines insist. 

“Judgments and stereotypes about how pregnant individuals should behave, their physical capabilities and what is or is not healthy for a fetus are pervasive in our society and cannot be used as pretext for unlawful discriminatory decisions“ in public venues, they say.

While being denied entry to bars may not be the first concern of most pregnant women, city officials confirmed they had at least once case pending of a woman who has formally complained precisely of such an incident, although they declined to give details.

The article seems to talk about two issues without really explaining which one they answer:

1) Should bar owners be allowed to ban pregnant women from entering the bar?

2) Should bar owners be allowed to ban pregnant women from ordering alcoholic drinks?

IMO, the first one should be 'no' (because you could just order a coke or a water), but the second should be 'yes'.

But it's not just like she's affecting her own life though. She's directly endangering her child.

I guess that makes sense, can't to still buy cigarettes if you are pregnant. But in bars you order for there and cigarettes could be bought for someone else.

It's not like the only place someone can get alcohol is a bar though. If a pregnant woman wants to drink she can easily go to the store and buy some alcohol. 

Plus I don't see how they would be able to enforce this rule accurately. Not all pregnant women have obvious baby bumps. And obviously early in a pregnancy you wouldn't be able tell easily. Also, lots of overweight women have belly fat that looks like a baby bump, so I can easily see how this could offend some people. Imagine going to a bar and being denied service because the bartender thinks you are pregnant when you aren't....

I think that there should be more regulations regarding a person's ability to purchase alcohol and smoking products (cigarettes, vapes, medical weed, etc.) while pregnant. 

But then again, this kinda seems hypocritical of me cause I'm strongly in favor of allowing women to do what they want with their bodies () like abortions and such.

But if the woman can buy a bottle of wine from a liquor store and drink it at home or wherever she should also be allowed to drink alcohol in a bar (even though it would be dangerously unwise of her to do so).

It's just keeping rules consistent.
