Didymus 34,379
I like you but I'm gonna be mean You look like a ****ing idiot for using that particular quote, in which Madge stresses the meaninglessness of critical and commercial evaluation, in a thread to prove she's the most successful out there. And, besides, we all know she stopped taking risks after 2003. Yes, we have the Live to Tell performance which was a masterpiece but she already pissed off the Vatican in 1989 so she doesn't get that one from me. Now she's making songs like Living for Love and Ghosttown so she can zip it, shut up about creative risks (which, ironically, was the basis of the Rebel Heart's promo - if anyone can point out to me which creative risks she took on that album, thanks in advance) and either continue to be Madonna (which does not mean copying herself 24/7 like she's doing now) or retire. Oh girl don't give me Little Monsters about Gaga bringing dance to the mainstream teas Besides, bringing back a sound that was massively successful a couple of years earlier (in the case of Confessions, basically Kylie's Light Years era) is not a risk. Anyway, the critics' responses say it all: they were happy Madonna ditched the "pretension" (i.e. the creative risks she took) and went back to the familiar club vibe. It was an obvious attempt to rescue her reputation after American Life, and not in the brilliant way that was Bedtime Stories, but in a way that wasn't challenging on any level musically, lyrically or visually. I love that era, but it's nonethless the start of Madonna settling for doing what's gonna appeal to the masses. Nothing wrong with that, but then I don't like people denying that, as if anything she did post-2003 wasn't already done better in the 80's and 90's She stopped evolving from that era onwards and it's a shame. I feel that with Hard Candy she just wanted her hip hop urban sound album. Whats wrong with trying to make a different record in sound than the previous one. That was evolving for her sound at the time. She wanted to name it Black Madonna with her on the cover painted black. Guy O. prevented it though and we lost that amazing album cover. And yes MDNA was more the kind of album that the goal was just to make people dance. All the fans were asking for a COADF 2.0. With Rebel Heart she just wanted to make good songs, there was no obvious theme. She had completed her art for freedom project, where i think she got some ideas. Critics pissed on her for making an album in a sound that was already sounding stale (ARTPOP teas). Now I love Hard Candy as an album but do I think it's beneath her as a musical release? Sure And no, she chose herself to change the artwork Indeed, another good example of Madge not wanting to take risks (though the album cover we did get actually was a risk imo lol). She chose it because she knew it would be too controversial for the wrong reasons. You are lyin' gurl She never said she just wanted to make good songs, and she kept babbling about what the album represents for herself and in the industry over and over. I get that you ignore that now because it was cringeworthy and embarrassing but it's still true. And the songs aren't even good, so she failed there anyway. For rebel heart she said it in on of her interview. I ll find this interview from 2015. And the album is one of her best.
