Though the gay icon that has been written in Gaga's reputation seems very difficult to brush off, so I think it's a 50/50. Born This Way's impact Nobody likes guilt, so as long as she can't out Slay Born This Way with a song that doesn't speak on social issues, that label and stigmas ain't going away, and she'll never become cool again… She's so underrated and I haaaatttteeeee it. CakeLikeLG 6,275
Partly yes, but at least her song is on GTA V, a game played by mostly straight men and most of them even like Applause (see youtube comments). My point is, with right song she can appeal to everybody live each day like Gaga might drop an album

Dominic 11,922
7 minutes ago, Didymus said: I think that image actually was constructed mostly in 2010 (not 2011 like many pretend) when she basically talked about "gay stuff" in every single interview. Plus, statements like "gay men understand me because they get my aesthetic" didn't help I think that reputation was never that overpowering though. I think more people associate her with bad music (though her talent is definitely getting more and more attention) and "theatrics" than some gayness. I think a lot of people think she's talented but just don't like her music, which is why they don't get pulled in completely. But that's not the same thing as being in a gay niche. Have to disagree. She received a lot of backlash for 'pandering to the gays'. I think it caused a lot of the casual listeners to feel alienated as they couldn't relate to a gay anthem like BTW or the message as whole. She's always been seen as a 'gay icon' and will likely to be seen that way similar to Madonna for years to come. It's not as overpowering anymore whether that's because people are used to Gaga discussing and fighting for gay rights or because she isn't as vocal anymore but that stigma was very much alive during 2010-2012 largely. The hardest thing in this world is to live in it

That's like saying she has to become basic for her to appeal the straight community. Well, at least that's how some members see it. Honestly, anything that isn't Gaga is basic to this fanbase She's done it with Applause, DWUW, and JnD (im fully aware with what i just said ) . I'm pretty sure she can do it again, she just needs the proper delivery this time. A Roar-sized hit.
Didymus 34,380
Just now, Dominic Marc said: Have to disagree. She received a lot of backlash for 'pandering to the gays'. I think it caused a lot of the casual listeners to feel alienated as they couldn't relate to a gay anthem like BTW or the message as whole. But the song was a smashing success And the album got a huge amount of attention and sold extremely well (in the beginning) months after that pandering single was released. So I don't buy that necessarily. The message wasn't even about equality (she did most of the equality speeches/statements in 2010, not 2011) for gays, it was about self-empowerment and the fact that it was a Madonna rip-off got a lot more attention than it being too gay for radio or whatever. I saw a first drop in attention and praise during Telephone's and Alejandro's release because people felt like she was just repeating tricks and trying to be shocking for no reason. Obviously has nothing to do with her being too gay. I don't deny that the image that was created (by Gaga, the fans themselves and the media) of Gaga's fanbase (basically a bunch of gays dressed up in police tape) probably alienated a lot of listeners, but I don't think that would have had much effect if people still felt fascinated by her actual work, which was undoubtedly the case from 2008 to 2009 despite her style being more "gay friendly" whatever that means. I always look at her V Festival and Glastonbury video's to remind myself that there was a huge mainstream, mixed audience just eating out of the palm of her hand. Her act was intriguing and addictive. And then it wasn't anymore. 3 minutes ago, Dominic Marc said: It's not as overpowering anymore whether that's because people are used to Gaga discussing and fighting for gay rights or because she isn't as vocal anymore but that stigma was very much alive during 2010-2012 largely. Well, I don't remember that. I don't doubt your memory or whatever, but.. I mean, I don't remember that myself. Besides, the accusation of her pandering to the gays is very different from people seeing her entire act as "gay". In fact, it's very different. But anyway, I simply don't remember that being such a big deal. I genuinely think that people who didn't declare to be "Gaga fans" were mostly just put off by her act and the way she presented herself. Let's face it, after 2010 she kept pretending she was a magnet for the misfits and the outcasts and the bullied and obviously that's gonna create some distance. Put music and video's on top of that that aren't appealing to a large audience and yes, you're no longer seen as the interesting pop star that's actually really talented. Slayer 9,227
Yes, but I think she is trying to change that. The last couple of years have gone in a completely different direction and she's evidently trying to appeal to different audiences. I think that's a really positive sign. The only thing is... in trying to appeal to older audiences, she has become really uncool. It depends what kind of artist she wants to be from now on, but if she wants mainstream success then I think she should find a way to become cool again. I love judas SO MUCH but I canʹt look like a copycat of JLO!!!!

SLAYing 3,136
She was a Gay Icon since day one.. she has always been that way.. It's just that after 'Born this way' she kinda became the leader of the lgbt youth or a cult leader of the same and thus lost many of the casual bandwagoners or your so called 'straight fans' and then ARTPOP happened.. Sadly, we all know what actually happened..But, Im sure with Lg5, She's gonna scalp them all bald.. wait and watch..
