BANGLADESH: Editor of Nation's First LGBT Magazine Hacked To Death

The editor of Bangladesh’s first ever LGBT magazine has been hacked to death by suspected Islamist militants in a horrific attack, it is reported.

Julhas Mannan, 35, who worked for ‘Roopbaan’, was killed alongside his friend, Tanay Mojumdar, in an apartment in the capital of Dhaka, a police official said.

A third person was injured in the attack in Kalabagan, which was carried out this afternoon by three blade-wielding attackers posing as couriers, the official added.

Dhaka Metropolitan Police spokesperson Maruf Hossain Sorder said: “Unidentified attackers entered an apartment at Kalabagan and hacked two people to death.

Eyewitnesses said the attackers chanted, “Naraye Takbir, Allahu Akbar,” as they left the flat after killing Mr Mannan and Mr Mojumdar. It is unclear what weapons were used in the deadly attack.

Mannan’s mother reportedly witnessed the murders. Last week ISIS claimed responsibility for the murder of an atheist college professor in Bangladesh.

Islam doesn't call for violence towards minorities. Lack of education (including the lack of mental consultation) leads to violence. Religion does not. Extremists only use their religion as an excuse for their horrible actions.

I'm not a big fan of religion, but I do think it's wrong to say it's all religion's fault when there are so many other factors that need to be considered first.

it really is a thing of interpretation but the crimes are committed by people, not by religion.

I hold Muslim leaders accountable for not being more active in combating these extremist movements taking root in their people, but what others in this thread are saying is right.

These are subjective interpretations that have been abused throughout Islamic history to commit horrible crimes. It's not the religion. It's the people abusing it for their own selfish goals.

A few centuries ago, you'd see the same things or even worse via other religions like Christianity or Taoism.

Islam calls for the murder of gay people in cold blood. So does Christianity and so does Judaism. It's all in the Old Testament. 

They're all f*cked up, but it seems like Islam has far more violent fundamentalists than any other religion on Earth.

You simply cannot say that this is not Islam just because they are extreme. They are fundamentalists, meaning they literally interpret the scripture.

Islam is approving violence in Kuran, same goes for Bible, but its followers aren't as extreme due to better economic, social and education background

I'm from Bangladesh and I actually knew who it was as soon as I read the headline. There's only one magazine and I instantly knew it was him. 

The worst part is I met him in late Feb this year (even went to that very apartment with a friend). Not a big fan of the guy but.. this is really heartbreaking and uncalled for. My heart goes out to his mother.

You simply cannot say that this is not Islam just because they are extreme. They are fundamentalists, meaning they literally interpret the scripture. 

It's true that more Muslims commit hate crimes than others, but that is, as I already said in my OP, because of where they live.

Muslims in the West don't go around killing gay people, it's the ones in countries where people aren't educated and have no one to tell them that being different is not a bad thing. 

A lot of children in Bangladesh don't even attend elementary school because of the low wages within the country. They can't afford going to school when their parents need help at home. It's not Islam that is making them kill gay people, it's a lot of things combined. One of them being the lack of education and the poor state of the country.

Also, I have yet to see exact lines that say "kill men who lay with men" in any holy book. Religion does play a role in all of this, I am not denying that, but it's not the one thing that motivates them to commit such horrible crimes (see UAE; they're not living by the Quran, but behaving the same way).
