ARTPOP is bad compared even to The Fame! The Fame has a lot of standouts and gems like Poker Face,Paparazzi,Paper Gangsta & LoveGame.ARTPOP gives no emotion. You hear Speechless and The Edge Of Glory and you feel the song but MANiCURE,Applause,Donatella & the whole album don't give you any feels, you can't have a connection! ARTPOP is her worst album..... I find people who rate The Fame higher than ARTPOP hilarious. And after that, I treat their posts as if I've added them to the Ignored Users List. #sorrynotsorry Back on topic: I wouldn't call ARTPOP a masterpiece, but it is genius. Very few artist could pull this concept. It's so broad and abstract that even her own fans failed miserably at understanding it. And you know it's actually simple - it's about getting rid of expectations or any rationality, it's about the thrill, the pure enjoyment and excitement of art. It's the ultimate invitation from her. It's like: Join me in my journey, let's pour paint all over our bodies and live in the moment (in the most metaphorical way ofc) while the others try to rationalise it, criticise it and so on. ARTPOP is the adrenaline rush that she promised, the celebration of art and inspiration, creation and reflection. And underneath this party, you actually hear the scream of a terribly damaged woman that's trapped. She is letting her pain and passion explode on the album. This is the genius part for me - at face value - a fun party album - is actually her most personal work to date. You get to hear a very sad part of her life that she's been hiding from everyone through the very opposite of what one may expect. So yeah for me, ARTPOP remains her best most interesting work to date, and I know why I've bonded so much with her through this album and not BTW let's say, which also has a lot of "heart". I'm not delusional to claim everything was perfect. It was a storm after storm during the era, with lots of damage and lost potential. But the message and the music is out there for everybody. It's up to you to strip down of any expectation and judgement and let the feelings flow in. That's ARTPOP - it's a rollercoaster of feelings, outbursts of emotions, and this can hardly be rationalised. It's freedom in the most philosophical sense. Benji 20,113
I think it's lowkey insulting to the rest of Gaga's work to say ARTPOP has more meaning than her past work but the ARTPOP army will never stop. The usual "Only a few people get it" and the "Everyone is blinded by numbers!" argument arises. Y'all no better than hipsters hopping from wagon to wagon. I like ARTPOP. It's a sturdy pop album, in fact it's a very good pop album but it deserved to be taken further than where it was left. Trying to make an experimental record whilst making it radio friendly was risky, and it didn't pay off as it ended up sounding vapid in my opinion. Of course, I think the time constraints and what was going on around Gaga also caused this but there was simply too many ideas, arguments and problems around that caused the creation to be hindered. I can understand why people like ARTPOP, it's a fun album but you don't need to try and justify you liking it by tearing down her other work.
Bleachella 2,932
ARTPOP tried to be a lot of things it wasn't. At the end of the day, is it a bad album? No, not really. It's cute, but nothing else. It's underwhemling. It's annoying when people automatically assume that you dislike ARTPOP because it "underperformed" (When, in reality, a lot of albums don't even go platinum nowadays ). Can't we just think that it's a bad album without being labeled as "Fake fans", or, "Controlled by the charts"? Like, it's bullshit. If you like the album, great! If you don't, great! It's your opinion. There's no need to attack everybody who dislikes ARTPOP. And please, get off your high horse and stop the "you don't understand the beauty and pain of ARTPOP!!11" and "ARTPOP is 2 complex for your basic souls!!" crap. Seriously every single song is such an anthem, from Aura to the title track to Dope to Applause.. Wow, it really just hit me how ahead of its time this album is. The tracks are so different from one another, there is almost no cohesiveness in the album which is so amazing and it's incredible how she pulled that off so well. Honestly, the song ARTPOP makes me feel so emotional, the beat and the melody to it is just everything, the lyrics, the vocals. Then there's Aura, which is so so so so different from ANYTHING and hen G.U.Y. And then Jewels&Drugs... This woman seriously knows how express her feelings through music, you can hear her anger and all her emotions in each song. The album truly feels like an adrenaline trip. It takes you to a different time and place. I will never understand those who say that ARTPOP was a bad album, it is such a beautiful piece of work and I am so so so proud of Lady Gaga for making this. It is truly timeless. Albums that usually aren't well received by the mainstream usually become gems down the road, ARTPOP is slowly becoming one of those gems of Gaga's career. It defied alot of things people expect from Gaga but at the same time, it was totally Gaga, or the idea of what we perceived Gaga to be. And people can say things like sales and numbers don't affect their opinion about it, but those things do affect so many Monsters' opinion of the album. And although maybe musically it wasn't groundbreaking for Gaga, but a lot of the lyrics and general ideas conveyed are fantastic. Like who else could write a song about Venus and Uranus or weed and call it Mary Jane Holland or a song Sexxx Dreams or MANiCURE? Some of those songs and ideas conveyed in them are by far better than any multimillion selling pop single from The Fame and The Fame Monster. I also think some of our reactions to ARTPOP might make Gaga a bit weary of being so out there with her music and fashion with the new album, I hope she continues being one who strays from the path of the mainstream and does her own thing instead of going along with what everyone else says she should do. Alien Tulip 12,428
It's a cute album but I wouldn't really call it a "masterpiece" or her "magnum opus". It's just a sugary fun bubblegum pop record minus Swine and Dope
