They are ADAPTING a foreign film into an American version for an American audience, which btw if you didn't know is around 60% white. Of course most of the cast would be white. People want to watch a film where they connect to the characters. I'm probably a minority in my opinion here but I think films should just stick to the race they are. In this case, the actress should've been Asian. I don't want a black Spider Man or whatever, if they were white, they're white. Spiderman Miles Morales is not white. Yet Hollywood will always make Spiderman Peter Parker and will probably never make a movie with the current Spiderman, Miles Morales. Eros92 2,528
Get over it. SJ has always been the perfect pic for the character. I remember WAY back when when they announced they were making an American live action adaptation I automatically thought she'd be perfect. Then I didn't hear much about the movie, saw Lucy and thought "GOD they need to make that GITS movie and cast her" and my prayers were answered. I mean come on they cast people on who they think is best. Clearly she nailed the role. I don't care if they casted someone black, Hispanic, white or Asian. As long as they can act and nail the role that's all I care about. But FYI the character isn't even human, she's s cyborg therefore it has no race. Yes it's an anime/manga which is based in Japan which explains her name cause she was manufactured in Japanso but they never state that she is any race.. It's been over twenty years and it's too great a film. I think if Hollywood is reaching into the anime bucket, I think they're going to stick to popular series, not movies already made. Though Ghost in the Shell is a weird choice. I know that an anime movie was released recently, and they remade the series, I thought there'd be several other series I'd go to. Like Attack on Titan, Black Butler, and Free! Bleach would also be a good choice, as it is STILL going on. Then there is Naruto which is ending as well. I think Ghost in the Shell is great for Hollywood to make a movie out of, but is its fandom even still strong enough to bring in a box office if ScarJo don't? I'm honestly asking because I usually don't care about stars in movies.

Brian Ryan 1,468
An anime character isn't presumably asian, wtf are some of you guys. They mainly speak Japanese and dubbed in English later. These comments. It's totally white washed. That women is Asian. I swear this thread reminds of the white person playing Michael Jackson and Zoe Saldana playing Nina Simone. The things Hollywood does for sales. No respect for culture.

Idk, I guess there's just things I consider more important than a live adaptation of a cartoon everyone's vocal and up in arms about Scarlett Johansson playing a character from an anime while there's people who've been wrongfully imprisoned, discriminated against in "professional" environments, outright attacked, or killed... Himeros26 1,688
This also reminds me of when a BLM activist protested at HilLiary's conference and she turned around and said "Let's get back to the issues" As if racial injustice isn't a thing. White people will never know what minorities feel, however. Because they've been conditioned that racism has already happened and has ended. JDi 1,495
"you have to understand the origins of anime" is the best they could come up with? so if this is about culture and not looks did they also have to cast Zach Galifianakis instead of Brad Pitt in "Troy"? Pitt fit the looks of Achilles better than any English-speaking Greek/Greek-American actor they could find and it's simply an American-produced adaptation and it's only positive to make the film more successful with a better-known lead. are we also going to condemn every American adaptation that's already been made just because everyone looking for ways to get in the holy fight for social justice is the thing now? are we really that retarded? ...and the creators of that anime obviously preferred their character Scarlet Johansson-looking. JustinTrudeau 2,419
http://collider.com/ghost-in-the-shell-scarlett-johansson-asian-controversy/ These test sought to shift Johansson’s ethnicity in post-production to make her appear Asian in the film. Fortunately, an insider clarified to ScreenCrush that these tests were immediately rejected upon review, but the problem is that there were seemingly enough voices behind the scenes that believed this to be a good idea in the first place. But why try making her look Asian in the first place? I fell down the stairs once as an actor.
