Bernie Sanders: Overturn NC and Miss. anti-LGBT laws as President

Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders said Friday that if elected president, he would overturn laws in Mississippi and North Carolina that critics say discriminate against the gay community.
“As president of the United States, I would do everything I can do to overturn those outrageous decisions by Mississippi and North Carolina,” he said on ABC’s “The View.” “We have gone too far as a nation. God knows we have seen so much discrimination in our history.”

Governors of Mississippi and North Carolina have recently signed bills into law that gay rights groups and some corporations have decried as discriminatory. Supporters of the bills say they are designed to protect the religious and individual freedoms of the states’ citizens.

“What we are trying to do is say, ‘You have your political views. That’s fine,'” Sanders added. “But I hope we remember what Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. told us. You judge people on their character, not on the color of their skin. And I would add to that not on their gender or sexual orientation.”

Well one would hope that the Democratic nominee would be against such laws, but his phrasing is quite misleading.

He said "I would do everything I can do to overturn" the North Carolina and Mississippoi laws. Speaking against those laws is commendable. But leading unknowing followers into thinking a president can overturn state laws is, at a minimum, irresponsible.

Presidents can do a lot of things to prevent these situations such as appointing solicitors general who might write amicus briefs for future Supreme Court cases. But presidents can't do or undo state laws. He should have said how he would do it. 

But this will impress lots of people who don't actually understand how politics and policy-making work in America I suppose. 

In any case, Go Bernie. It's always a worthy topic talking about anyway no matter what is said and I commend him for talking about it on TV.

Bernie is the most caring and honest person in politics that I have ever seen. I find myself getting emotional whenever I hear him talk about social justice and human rights. You can tell he genuinely cares so much and isn't in it for any other reason than that. Evidence is in the fact that he hasn't changed his position on these topics for his entire career. This man is one of my idols. I just love him so much.

Glad to see Bernie has evolved (flip-flopped) on LGBT issues. 

In 2006, he took a stand against same-sex marriage in Vermont, stating that he instead endorsed civil unions. Sanders told the Associated Press that he was comfortable with civil unions, but not full marriage equality. (To justify his stance, Sanders complained that a battle for same-sex marriage would be too “divisive.”) 

Bernie voted against DOMA. 

When serving as mayor of Burlington, Sanders told an interviewer that LGBT rights were not a “major priority” for him. Asked if he would support a bill to protect gays from job discrimination, Sanders responded, “probably not.”

But the issue is that like most of his promises, he doesn't outline how he would do it, at least not in any realistic manner.

He said he would outright overturn these laws as president, rather than say that he'd continue on the path Obama has started to have the Supreme Court ultimately overturn it. This issue is up in their hands.

So he's ultimately taking credit using misdirection. He's saying "I'll fix the problem" when he technically cannot unless other factors, some of which not under his control, come into fruition.

That's the problem I have with his statement. It's deliberately misleading.
