djBuffoon 12,129
Lyrically and melodically, the song is a masterpiece. Which is why the bridge (dum dash-de dum) comes as a bit of a letdown.
Fernster7 7,923
Bloody Mary is my favorite song on BTW, it has always been. I think they lyrics and the production mesh really well, it's amazing. River 118,374
The "bloody" is not "she's bleeding" it's more like "dirty" like you say "bloody hell".. When you're gone I'll still be the Mary that everyone hates, the prostitute, the dirty... this is what she meant.. So sploosh your juice all over me you Riverboy

Gardevoir 9,901
44 minutes ago, hmm said: That wasn't my point though, the biblical-esque lyrics obviously point towards Mary Magdalene but the phrase 'Bloody Mary' refers to Queen Mary I of England, it's a common mistake so it's not obvious whether it was intentional or that Gaga is unaware of it. I know I'm explaining myself badly with this though  I think Bloody stands more for fvcking. Fvcking Mary. Sugar, spice, and everything nice. luckythisway 2,610
the second verse is the best. I shout the lyrics at the top of my lungs (and also the scream right before it).
LaLuna 12,732
Very interesting interpretation, but what about when the male voices keep repeating something like "gaagaaah, gaaagaaaah"? What the hell does that mean? Is that some kind of biblical metaphor as well?

PopThatArt 2,193
1 hour ago, Black Salvatore said: Gaga is generally known for her weird and particularly notable lyrics. From "cherry cherry boom boom" to "wear an ear condom next time". She usually uses metaphors which are hard to figure out instantly but that doesn't mean they are indeed pointless. Bloody Mary is one of her songs you have to analyze in order to comprehend its complete and unadulterated meaning. For those of you who might not be aware of it: "Love is just a history that they may prove And when you're gone I'll tell them my religion's you When "Punktius" comes to kill the king upon his throne I'm ready for their stones" Gaga here is reffering to the uncontrollable, evanescent eros between Mary Magdalene and Jesus Christ himself. Their relationship is intimate, but regarded as a spectacle to the outsiders who are, unfortunately, the ones who will judge and define its authenticity and prevalence. When Jesus is crucified and gone, she will declare him as her only religion, showing her adoration towards Him incessantly and unconditionally. Afterwards, Pontios Pilate arrives to fulfil the prophecy and Mary Magdalene is getting prepared to confront all the inescapable criticism and hatred. "I'll dance, dance, dance With my hands, hands, hands Above my head, head, head Like Jesus said I'm gonna dance, dance, dance With my hands, hands, hands above my head Hands together, forgive him before he's dead" Mary Magdalene is going to celebrate her love before Jesus is dead, precisely like he commanded people to do. She's going to forgive all those evil acts and keep dancing moments prior to the tragic end. Her dancing is a ritual of loss, agony and despair. "Because I won't cry for you I won't crucify the things you do I won't cry for you See, when you're gone I'll still be Bloody Mary" Despite the insurmountable grief, Mary Magdalene is going to wear an impenetrable facade and keep being a martyr for Jesus. She won't chastise His actions like the others did. She won't cry when everyone is going to recognise his divinity/significance since she's always known the truth. She's still going to be hurt and broken. She'll still keep on bleeding due to the perception the others had attached to her and her love."We are not just art for Michelangelo To carve, he can't rewrite the agro Of my furied heart. I wait on mountain tops in Paris cold Je ne veux pas mourir tout seule" No artist can encapsulate the passion between them. No carved marble could ever reify the sense of desperation dominating the two of them. Letters and words are not enough to denote the overwhelming fury and rage of those moments which are forever going to be misinterpreted or underestimated. Gaga/Mary Magdalene continues waiting in places of sorrow and loneliness just for her Saviour to arrive and live the rest of their lives together happily, just so she doesn't die alone, or end up alone for the rest of her life. Sorry if this is way too long, but we need to appreciate how good a songwriter Gaga is Lyrically, sure. But musically? I wouldn't say masterpiece.
