Is Lana Del Rey, one of the most underrated vocals today?

In terms of atmospherics and uniqueness in general, she is quite underrated. 

But not as a vocalist, in my opinion, that is her biggest weakness.

As a vocalist alone? Not really. A lot of people still hang onto the idea that she can't sing at all from that one SNL appearance lol. She's a very nervous live singer which to me seems the reason why her touring schedule has been so sporadic as of late, and she hasn't made a single television appearance in years. But anyone who has taken the time to check out live videos from her knows that she can sing well.

As an artist in general? Yeah. But she clearly doesn't care. Her career is very unique, but it works for her and I guess it makes her happy. As a fan I wish she was more celebrated and promoted more so that she could be as popular as she was with BTD, but ultimately it doesn't matter. She's an incredible artist and she puts out great records.

She sure is talented. A bit repetitive, but she sure knows what she's about. And she sure delivers

Now, if you really have technique, however you acquired it, you'll be able to sing well in every circunstance. Not so well, but her voice is very shaky, there's little control.

If you want to be a real musician you can't simply depend on such trivial things. We all have days we sing very well and it comes out with no effort and other days. If you're not consistent, you're not a good vocalist.

I've been liking her more and more.

This is one of those things. If only Gaga had a special voice like Lana. I think Lana's voice is really beautiful, it's a pitty she doesn't work a bit more on that.

It's a shame she's never won a Grammy. She makes the sort of music that the academy normally loves, I don't understand it. But the academy have been making some unusual snubs these days. Have you ever seen her live? I'm expecting not because if you had, you'd probably think very differently. I saw her live back when she was still considered a bad singer (I bought that ticket with a lot of trepidation) but was blown away. Even the critics praised her. If the videos that had previously been provided for you don't convince you, try this:

Pay attention specifically to 0:32, 2:43, 3:27, 5:37 and 6:04.

 

Lethargic and depressing doesn't have to mean bad, though. It just doesn't appeal to you, that's all. I find depressing vocals to be very haunting and beautiful. And her music has changed between albums. Not massively, but she has had a distinctly different sound per album. Born To Die was a throwback to many retro sounds from the 40's and thereabouts that is difficult to pin down exactly what genre it is, Ultraviolence had classic rock influences and sounded very different (this is why it divided her fans and her sales dwindled) and Honeymoon has trap, jazz, Latin and middle eastern influence.

I wouldn't think she has such a good vocals. Wow. I'm impressed. I am a fan of her, but I'm not checking that much into every performance of her. And to think people mostly judge her abilities only because of SNL and her stage fright.

Oh, trust me, she can sing amazingly. She has major anxiety. Usually she sings a song, smokes a cigarette to calm her nerves, then gets into it. I've seen her before. Honestly quite amazing. Who cares if anyone dislikes her really? Each to their own, who gives a **** about how other people feel for real? lmao

Well, my point was that I knew she could sing well, but I didn't know that she could sing that well as in presented videos.

No. She should have won a grammy or ascap by now. Her lyrics and her albums are usually what they are looking for when it comes to winners. Odd.

Gaga is still the better songwriter. Gaga's records are weak, but if you take out the Gaga, you've got at least 5 incredibly strong songs. if you take out the Lana from her songs you get a collection of desperate songwriting attempts.

Lana is a Leonard Cohen type of musician (how fitting she's covered him). poetic lyrics/boring amateurish melodies. her hypnotic delivery and the tasteful production make the songs sound professional. she's an artist this way, but not really a songwriter in the classical sense. her poetry would sound just... lame, were it performed by a classically trained vocalist. that's why she can't drop the awkwardly vacant shaky voice.

so, on-topic, I think Lana can only be overrated as a vocalist and a songwriter, but is still pretty underrated as an artist. she's not an original thinker either but she's extremely crafty at creating a brilliantly distinct atmosphere to her art and will be remembered for her vision and for the woman she is the way only true icons are. so yeah... I think she's great. I saw her live. she was hot.

I definitely agree. I wish Lana wrote for people. She is one of the best female songwriters I seen. I love Gaga, but yes Lana's lyrical content is miles ahead.

She wanted to be a poet growing up and never really had plans for being a profesional singer. She has said she's not a natural performer, so I forgive her nerves onstage. Look how she cried in Dublin when fans sang along with her, she hardly believed she'd be here, for loads of reasons. 

Match that against Gaga who planned to slay performance art since she came singing out of the womb. Though I'm sure she did miss its acoustics.

She's in-between overrated and underrated tbh. I don't think she planned to be as popular as she is right now and I don't think she wants to be huge like the pop stars we have today.
