hELXIG 42,966
You said it! Not to mention she's been talking for years now about having moments where she's wanted to , and even threatened to, quit the commercial industry/retire from pop music. She's told fans backstage at artRAVE that she wanted to stray from pop music. She's been really feeling disco again. She even said that with this album she's been thinking about what messages and music she wants to leave behind, and has mentioned thinking about what she wants to be remembered for. It's become a bit of a cliche saying here but... "music not the bling". The signs are all there. Anyone who disbelieves this and says she's going put out a number 1, chart topping, EDM/pop album this time around is lying to themselves and being ignorant of the facts. I'll be myself until they fūcking close the coffin.

Just because you aren't basic and make music tailored for the radio/chart success it doesn't mean you aren't a commercial artist. They are indeed different to the likes of Katy and Taylor, but saying Bey and JT aren't commercial isn't true, nor is there anything wrong with that. Bt1 5,213
They all sell something. Beyonce and JT sold many albums and JT actually tried really hard to have another succesfull single after Mirrors. Beyonce is also in the business way longer than Gaga, so I dont think Gaga can do what you are saying before having another very succesfull era. Idk why y'all are always making such a big deal out of it. Don't come at me with your lame "but ARTPOP flopped" excuses because what ruined that era was the bad choices and management. The music was great and artistry was good. I totally agree that ARTPOP underperformed not because of its artistry but lack of promotion. I'm not saying Gaga will absolutely ignore the sales/promotion aspect of her music, I'm just saying she will take those into account to a lesser extent when she makes her music. If Room in My Heart (written by Elton John) is indeed a single from LG5, you can evidently discern the difference in her attitude today and in the past. I do think she will properly promote her material considering Bobby is managing her, but to have that kind of appeal (1 billion views for a single) that JB and TS have? Not really with LG5 from what I can see.

DIL did well in the US but it's global success is nowhere near Sorry, Blank Space, Dark Horse, which is not necessarily a bad thing.
eifulien 2,954
I also believe this is the direction of the album. Gaga has never played it safe in the pop field. She has always tried to stir things up, change the status-quo and the perception of the public which ultimately backfired during ARTPOP (which actually is probably her least risky album). As much as I love ARTPOP, I think this is not the music with which you stay for long in the music industry. She needs to carve a firm place with LG5, her own niche and identity. Which is what I think the OP means when he mentions JT and Beyoncé. It's not that such artists aren't commercial anymore, it's just that they have a strong identity and strive to bring something new to the table. I don't think that for Gaga, Bruno, Bey, JT and even Rihanna with ANTI is important to lead/top the charts at all costs. As long as the music quality is there, the impact will be felt. Whereas with "singles" artists it isn't the same. Their presence can be easily washed out. It was all about Rihanna with LOUD, TTT and Unapologetic, Katy with Prism and Miley with Bangerz, then came Tay with 1989, then came Justin with Purpose. The radio lacks identity and replaces easily the "leaders" when someone newer comes. And besides, aiming for quality and acclaim doesn't diminish the chances for good singles performance on the radio. Bruno, Adele, Justin Timberlake have had huge hits. Beyonce is one of the most respected pop artists in the industry but if you look at her singles, they don't perform as well as Katy Perry, Rihanna or Taylor Swift's. These are extremely radio-friendly singers. BEYONCE was a critically acclaimed album but Drunk in Love, XO, Haunted, Pretty Hurts were not as big as Roar, Wrecking Ball, Shake It Off, Dark Horse, Chandelier, etc. Beyonce is an album seller though, she sells out stadium shows and is never deemed by critics or pop fans to be 'basic', which is a term occasionally associated with artists like Taylor Swift and Katy Perry. Justin Timberlake has 9 Grammys, sold 1 million copies of The 20/20 Experience in its debut week, sold out stadium shows and is also one of the artists that is respected in the industry for the authenticity in his music. I just have this feeling that Gaga doesn't want to be commercial anymore. She probably will still do extensive promotion for her singles/albums but I think the nature of her music will not be composed in the nature that appeals to each and everyone in the universe ala 1989, Prism (no shade). The fact that she enlisted Mark Ronson, Nile Rodgers, Elton John, Diane Warren as her collaborators is kind of a big hint that we shouldn't expect her to replicate her The Fame Monster or Born This Way appeal. So what I'm trying to say is that we shouldn't expect tons of #1s and videos with billions of views cause that's what Justin Bieber, Katy Perry, Taylor Swift are good at. Gaga prefers the party where Justin Timberlake, Beyonce, Kendrick Lamar, Bruno Mars hang out at. Did you mean Drunk in love has better quality than Chandelier? I just want gaga to be popular again and on the radio more again I want her to have big hits but number 1s dont mean anything its all about longevity and getting those top 10s Lol I never said JT and Beyonce flopped miserably with ALL of their singles. I was referring to their general musical character and career inclination. I love how y'all praise my king JT but TKO, Tunnel Vision, Take Back The Night were not as successful as you think. Also most artists usually release 5 to 6 singles from one album, JT stops at 3 and barely promotes them (except for Mirrors and Suit & Tie).
