As a student in political science, everyone being crazy about Bernie makes me cringe a bit tbh. 

Of course what's he proposing is making everyone dream, because what he's proposing is social progress and would be the absolute best solution. 

Except that there's one thing you don't consider : in a democratic system, we don't elect a dictator for five years with absolute powers, we elect someone with limited powers (especially in the US) and who has to seek consensus with the legislative power that is COMPLETELY differentiated from the executive power. 

In politics, you opt for the relatively better solution rather than the absolute best solution. Because the best solution will satisfy less people in the political realm, therefore it will be harder to implement it (not to say it might be actually impossible in terms of politics). I'm not talking about the technicalities of what Bernie is proposing (technically with absolute powers at the federal level and with all states supporting his propositions, his propositions could be done) but I'm talking about the technicalities of the political field : elected representatives are not here for the common good, they are here for private interests of a part of society. 

 

Studying political science/theory made me sceptic about big promises and I think that if you want real democracy, you can't get everything that you would want to have, democracy is knowing to satisfy oneself with less but it comes in exchange of equality in terms of freedom and relative satisfaction..

You do realize Bernie DESTROYED himself with not making it clear Fidel Castro is evil? He was shown footage of himself in the 80's making remarks that showed him being a Castro sympathizer. 

I'm a Bernie supporter but that does NOT sit well with me. Lost some respect for him last night.

I think Bernie lost this debate. Praising Cuba's communist eduction and healthcare system is not something Cuban refugees will take lightly. Or something any American should take lightly.

But it is an impressive system. What, are we stuck in the Cold War years where all these commies are out to get us? clearly the propaganda from that age worked at demonizing socialist governments in the eyes of Americans which makes sense why Bernie makes so many people fired up, negatively or positively.

 

But yeah Cuba has supremely high literacy rates and universal healthcare. How is that bad?

I live in the US. Can't say I've ever spoke with Cuban refugees can you hook me up with one of them sounds like you've talked to many

Please I live in Miami. Most Cubans who get here can hardly read Spanish and the "universal healthcare" you speak of isn't something they want to trade their freedom for. They would rather die at sea to make their way to the US than continue to live like that.

Under a communist regime. Where freedoms are restricted, food is scarce and fear keeps people under control. Where a 90 mile trip at sea that could mean death or freedom is a better option than living under a dictator.

Did either of you watch the video that the clip was selected from? It is not a clip of him praising the Castros. It's a talk about US interventionism and the ramifications of their theory on Cuba at the time.

Yes, however Bernie seemed to avoid when asked about his "praise" for Castro. He just turned all the Cuban community in Florida against him. 

Now people have an actual basis for calling him a Communist. 

A campaign disaster. Imagine if he were to get to the general election....
