In the universe of HP... "Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them" is a famous and classic book/encyclopedia of magical creatures written by a british Magic Zoologist and wizard, Newt Sacamander. Newt became extremely famous wizard for being the sole person to discover and study hundreds of species of magical creatures all over the world.. It's considered required reading for all Hogwarts students.

JK Rowling decided to write a screenplay adapting this book that exists in the HP world (and she even released a condensed childrens version of it for charity in 2000 and I own it :)) and make it a film trilogy (screenplay by: JK Rowling herself) rather than write more books.

fantastic-beasts-and-where-to-find-them-

FBWTFT is about Newt Scamander venturing to New York City, USA in 1920's to continue his unprecedented world wide journey of discovering unknown magical creatures to capture and study. He keeps all the hundreds of creatures and their habitats he's found so far in his magical briefcase

Somehow the briefcase is accidentally opened and releases all of the creatures upon the city of NYC and now Newt must quickly find and re-capture the escaped creatures before they wreak havoc on city and expose the wizarding world to muggles or "nomag" (american word for non-magical people). Newt is also facing legal turmoil with the Magical Congress of the United States of America (american wizarding goverment) and could potentially be a criminal if he isn't able to catch them all in time. The trilogy will be introducing what the American wizarding world is like.

JK Rowling has decided to expand even further past Fantastic Beasts films by writing a new collection of short stories about the history of Magic in North America and release them on Pottermore (JK Rowling's mega site for potter fans), which is what this trailer was the official announcement for.

The most important thing to understand the new movies, stories, books, etc.... Is that everything relates back to the fact that JK Rowling wants to expand the reader's frame of reference / knowledge map of the wizarding world from the UK to the US. Almost nothing is known about the US wizarding world, the entire HP books might have 2 sentences about it.

It's a brilliant way to breathe new life into the series without harming the other series.

Pottermore is as annoying as Tidal :saladga:

I LOVE Harry Potter, will always love it and has been a huge part of my life, but she's so annoying with that site. I hate having to go on there and having to look and click and search for everything short story or character profile, when it would be so much easier if she put out a companion or encyclopedia, which she refuses to do. All of this, plus all those random ass tweets about characters, plus the play and now this are kind of ruining it for me tbh. I'll still read everything down the line I guess, but they way they are handling the franchise and all this new cannon information is ****

who will love me when the night is over

all of this :applause: that's why i don't read anything about Pottermore or this stuff. I don't want my HP universe to be ruined. As silly as it might sound, the magic's gone. It just seems so forced.

In the universe of HP...

Daaaamn!!! Thank you for explaining everything so well :D No wonder I was so confused without all that info! People are like "that's the new Harry Potter movie" and that's it, which is not at all that simple xd

Rowling is a f genius tbh, who can come up with such a huge and "logical" universe? I wonder if she thinks of other things than the magical universe in her everyday life xd Off topic: Been playing Pokemon since the games and anime came out, and this is also a huge universe with "logical" sense. By that I mean that everything is connected and you can get anwers who don't contradict each other. Seems like Rowling is that kind of creative genius.

why did u take the "I own one :)" part away? that was cute haha such a Rowling fan! :') I haven't read a full book (besides my study books, which I don't enjoy reading) in my life, but I should read HP if I decide to start reading :D

Anyway, is "nomag" a word to shade how American English is an easy version of British English? haha nomag = no magical?

How do you feel about this whole thing tho'? Are you happy? Or do you think she's milking it out? ^^

Considering all of this was 100% JK Rowling's idea and she is writing the whole movie and has more creative control than ever.... I'd say there's no way as a fan that I can't be happy. It's like shes literally revealing all new things to us that we've never even heard and the movie will tell us everything! She is basically giving us a gift, that we legit have no right to criticize, considering it's entirely new information, characters, settings... you know what I mean? I think that makes it even more exciting and will make the film just a blast that i'll want to see over and over to catch all the new things again

Very different from the other films which came after the books and all fans had such outrageous expectations with every film

Now Rowling has all of the control of that. The only way I will be disappointed is if the movie after editing and etc, that it sucks or Rowling's writing on this story is subpar and it just turns out to be a bad movie. I HIGHLY doubt that will happen but that is my ultimate worst fear and was every time I was seeing one of the HP movies for the first time. I was worried it would be panned by critics, hated by audiences and wouldn't be respected as a movie as the books were. Thank god that wasn't the case and with 8 films became the most successful film franchise of all time and grossed over 2 billion dollars worldwide. (Now Marvel unthroned it with their excessive number of films) but to be honest if HP had as many movies... it would still be number 1
