I thought he was kinda weak in that debate, tbh. He was deviating from the topic sometimes to focus on his bulletpoints he wanted to hit, and he didn't clearly explain his side of the issue with the automobile industry. I thought there was a lot of room for improvement.

I'm white and I grew up in a 5 person family with an annual income of less than 10k... going out to eat was a rare treat we got every few years.. i'm 18 and i've never been on holiday.. I only started getting proper casual clothes when I grew up and got a job..

The man grew up poor, and his parents died young. He contrasted his experience growing up poor with people of color. You're taking his words completely out of context  I watched the debate last night and while it might have been worded poorly, I'm fairly certain he was trying to say that a white person does not know what it's like to be a poor black person. Being poor is awful for anyone but given the social climate/racial tensions in the US it's a lot worse to be a poor black person than a poor white person.

It's like you all are sitting at your computers waiting to be offended. Smh.

Yeah I noticed that too. I think they were talking about the US Export-Import Bank and out of nowhere Sanders is like "you know what really sucks? Healthcare!!"

Bernie has clarified these comments in an interview with NBC where he states:

"What I meant to say, is when you talk about ghettos, traditionally what you're talking about is African-American communities"

I think it's a strategy to get more black voters. He knows he can't win without them, so sometimes as a politician you have to say things you don't want to say to get votes. Sanders is a person who clearly has made up his mind about many issues, including race, privilege and so on. He would normally never say this, but for election purposes perhaps :shrug:

he means this relatively speaking, if read his full answer. he basically means "you may have struggled financially, but you dont know how much harder it is for people of color who grew up in ghettos and have had to fight for their right to live". which is true.

Well generally, yeah. Poor white people still have far different circumstances than compared to poor minorities. Even if white people are poor, they still have better circumstances as a whole to get themselves out of that situation that aren't afforded to other groups.
