Bernie Sanders: If You're White, You Don't Know What It's Like To Be Poor

Apologies if there's a thread on this somewhere, I haven't seen any threads related to last night's debate.

*During the CNN Democratic debate Thursday night Sen. Bernie Sanders claimed that if someone was white they don’t know what it’s like to be poor or live in a ghetto.

“When you’re white you don’t know what it’s like to be living in a ghetto, you don’t know what it’s like to be poor,” said Sanders. “You don’t know what it’s like to be hassled when you walk down the street, or dragged out of a car.”

The remarks came in response from a question by CNN’s Don Lemon that asked candidates what “racial blind spots” they had.

Do you agree with Sanders' claim that White people don't know what it's like to be poor and that only minorities live in ghettos?

Kind of a dumb thing to say. In NYC and other urban areas theres a lot of italian, jewish, irish, albanians etc living in the projects, shelters, in gangs, jobless, on welfare/foodstamps/SSI. I think what he means is that white people have privilege but to say they dont know how it is to be poor is kinda stupid. Most rich people in America are white but theres also a lot of poor people that are white.

the harassed part is the only thing that might be true but not if you count the white dudes with us that were harassed right along with us because they were skaters and cops always wanted to **** with the skaters.

I disapprove of what you say, but will defend to the death your right to say it.

I usually have the same viewpoint with what Sanders says but are there really no white poor people in the U.S.?

It's true that every white person isn't poor?

White people have privilege but let's not all assume they are born behind a white picket fence and don't work hard. In NYC and some other urban cities you will see LOTS of italians, jewish people, albanians etc living in the ghetto with minorities and they are rely on SSI checks and food stamps. Realistically the real poor people who are struggling are the homeless people in Africa, Southern Asia, and other countries in poverty who go days without eating and drinking.

Bernie supporter here.

He grew up white and poor in a rent controlled apartment. Why on earth he said it this way, I have no idea. It certainly isn't true, nor does everything else he has to say support that single "headline".

This is an out of context soundbite, fabricated to smear Sanders. His response to the blind spot question was simple: there are different realities in America if your white or black. He may not have worded his response clearl, but his entire answer was meaningful.

The man grew up poor, and his parents died young. He contrasted his experience growing up poor with people of color. No mention in the OP about how black people in general have a more difficult time in society than whites? Sanders mentioned it. The fact that you don't bother to mention that is biased. This is a non-issue.

I come from a family where we were homeless twice and lived off £5 a week whenever we were housed to satisfy 5 kids whilst my parents worked endless hours just to keep us warm and put food on the table.

**** off with your nonsense. I'm fed up with this white privilege ****. I came from a working class family that literally ate **** from the floor.

In my messy era.
