Maybe Elizabeth Taylor as someone who has championed gay rights but Marlene Dietrich was the first true LGBT pioneer. Her introduction to Hollywood was the first time a lesbian kiss appeared in a major Hollywood film in 1930. The film was "Morocco" She the reason Madonna wears a tuxedo in Vogue.

I don't know if she is the ultimate gay icon, but she is definitely a legendary actress, iconic beauty (see her early roles), with a big personality. She's right there with Bette, Joan, Veronica, Maureen, Mae, and heeps others. She IS Hollywood royalty, even Death couldn't stop her.

Just repeat to yourself, "It's just a show. I should really just relax."

Wasn't there another actress around Marlene's time that was of a similar vein? Name escapes me though.

No.

In regards to the infamous statement she supposedly said, apparently it was a "terrible misunderstanding" and she apologized for it. (x)

Some other quotes from Donna:

"A couple of the people I write with are gay, and they have been ever since I met them. What people want to do with their bodies is their personal preference. I'm not going to stand in judgment about what the Bible says about someone else's life. I've got things in my life I've got to clean up. What's in your life is your business."

"I don't look at people by their sexual orientation. I don't judge people because they are gay or straight. My love for people is based on my compassion as a person."

(x)

I'm not a woman. I'm not a man. I am something that you'll never understand.

Well 1930's I can think of Mae West. She was so far ahead of her time.

I'm not an expert on the 1930's tho. I have seen a couple documentaries and some names peaked my interest. Mae West was an amazing gay icon throught her life. Not only a gay icon but a powerful female sexuality icon.

No doubt. She is legend and the epitome of sexual power and femininity. She was both charismatic and provocative. She owned that **** in a time where women were often encouraged to be quiet, chaste, and stay at home; as well as a pioneer in an era where film was just getting out of it's infancy, and where some of the more "high brow" still saw the "moving pictures" as a vulgar fad that no respectable woman would be part of. She was also a damn fine actress, even if the time period sought a more "theatrical flamboyancy" in performance.

Just repeat to yourself, "It's just a show. I should really just relax."
