The payola for radio play depends on which artists are priorities at labels mand what else labels have to offer to get radio play. The vast inconsistencies with the radio play for the majority of Katy's singles this last era means that there was a lot of payola going on with her singles. We are discussing the current radio climate. Try to stay in this decade. Crossover appeal? What are you talking about with that? Whitney and Mariah had crossover appeal from R&B/Urban formats to HAC/CHR formats. I guess Celine had crossover to AC...but that is such a small, rather insignificant format. Katy doesn't really have crossover appeal. She is a pop artist, whose songs do best on pop formats, in general. The question isn't radio support. The question is when radio supports all your songs like they are at the top of the iTunes Charts for months. (and there is nothing else to back it up, like having an album sitting in the top 3 for months) Radio responds to demand...OR legal payola...and that payola is what was driving three of the five releases. Certain artists benefit greatly from it and other artists, with better songs and/or albums, get left behind. All artist do not get the benefit...I never said they did. Go back and read my OP. But everybody jumped saying things like "of course she is a bully she is the worst she is not artist and she is grammyless !!!" when Katy has never said anything bad about Gaga or about any other star yet Monsters hate her only because PRISM was more successful than ARTPOP. Hell, even Gaga has shaded her yet people blame Katy for it. I'm not saying you made the thread to trash her of course, it's just because of some annoying users.
