StrawberryBlond 14,882
UGH. This one absolutely blindsided me. As always, a Grammys with a lot of good wins, a helluva lot of bad ones. This reminded me of 2011's AOTY win of Arcade Fire's The Suburbs. That band only won one other award for the album but for some bizarre reason, also took home the biggest award of the night. It made absolutely no sense and was one of many reasons as to why I, and many others, considered if that win was bought or there was some kind of corruption going on. And once again, 1989's win gets me suspicious. The other award she won was for a music video, for crying out loud! So, technically, she won no awards for any specific songs over that entire album (remember that SIO was nominated for 3 awards last year but didn't win any) as she only won in categories that judged the entire body of work and in an irrelevant music video category. Considering that the only song she'll be able to submit next year is OOTW and judging by the way the academy awarded her, I'd say it probably won't win. Meaning that at the end of the day, when the album has ended all its nominations, this so-called AOTY will only have won 3 (and one of which being for a music video) out of 11 (give or take) nominations for it. How is that in any way, shape or form, album of the year worthy? Did the academy read her magazine interview where she said she cried after losing AOTY for Red and thought that by not winning the award, it means she didn't make her best ever work? Because that stuff should lower your chances, not heighten them. Now, I'm normally the first to deny racism at awards shows but in moments like this, I see exactly where people are coming from. To give Kendrick the most awards of the night (as well as nominations) and yet not give him the biggest prize at the end of it all in favour of a pretty blonde white girl who only won 2 awards that night is highly suspicious (it happened to Lady Antebellum a few years back too, Arcade Fire's year). How can you say that an album was amazing in the most amount of ways out of all the nominees that night, yet not award it the biggest award of all? FFS, academy, if you're going to go for controversial choices, at least be consistent. I have a hard time believing that so many academy members who were obviously thinking in the same way, came to the decision not to give Kendrick the award. And I'm not a fan of Kendrick's album at all. But I'm a stickler for consistency and I will speak up if I think someone got treated unfairly and Kendrick got treated unfairly. It's almost like he's become one of the academy's running jokes. In 2014, he was nominated for 7 awards but won nothing (which ties him with India Arie as the biggest non-winning nominee in one night in Grammy history). This year, he wins almost all his awards, is the most awarded artist of the night...yet fails to take home the ultimate prize. How disrespectful. And they had the audacity to award Taylor for the song that featured Kendrick in it! Just to twist the knife in deeper! And lastly, her "feminist" speech just made me sick. She doesn't have a clue about what feminism is truly all about. She's one of the reasons why so many white feminists have to defend themselves and prove that they're not ignorant. Because there are a lot of ignorant white "feminists" who only understand women's oppression from their superior view of whiteness, beauty and money. She speaks as if all women can achieve their dreams if they just try hard enough. Sorry, love, but life isn't like the fairytales in your songs. You got to where you are because you had a well-off family who spoilt you rotten and obeyed your demands to move to a different state so that you could start a music career at 13 (try telling your parents to do that at 13, kids of the world!). You got to where you are because you're a pretty, blonde, blue-eyed white girl. You got to where you are because you write generic songs that little girls loved and now make generic music that everyone loves. There are loads of girls out there who are way more talented than you but will never get what you have because they don't have the support of a wealthy family or good looks or the aspiration to make generic music. But people like Taylor Swift just don't understand that. They occupy a different world, so feminism means something very different to them. 19 hours ago, Whispering said: That's not a feminist card, that's standing up for herself as a human being, a person that deserves respect for the hard work and dedication that she has given to her career and artistry. Taylor was one hundred per cent in the right for calling out that she was degraded to being called someone's bitch that they wanted to have sex with and then trying to take credit for her success. How many respected male artists face those types of comments? Good for her for calling that misogynistic crap out! While she had every right to defend herself (although I don't think an awards speech was the place to do it), I think they're talking more about the other feminist part of her speech, where she said that as women, people will try to take you down and discredit you but ultimately, you just have to work hard and realise when you make it that it was your drive and the love of the people around you that got you there. See what I wrote in the paragraph above for why I found this problematic. Others have expressed these same views throughout this topic too.
HEARTHUNTER 7,611
I'm glad she got to defend herself towards Kanye But I believe that Kendrick deserved the AOTY, his album was by far the best among the nominees... well, I'm entitled to my opinion I guess

PREACH IT. This exactly. It doesn't add up and it doesn't make sense. If you even lay out objectively what each album brings to the table 1989 doesn't stand a chance against TPAB. If you even lay out objectively what each album brings to the table 1989 doesn't stand a chance against TPAB. Because artists in genres that are more limited tend to dominate the categories available. Pop artists contend with a wider range of options. There isn't usually a general consensus like you see with smaller genres. Why do you think Beyonce has so many Grammys? What category did she receive mist of those awards? There have been TWO rap albums to ever win AOTY. Those two rap albums also had number one songs. That's why TPAB didn't really stand a chance. Look at all the rap albums that have been passed up for AOTY over the years.
