In fairness to Katy, she has some pretty decent pop records - but here's the thing: she's certainly not what she's trying to express here. In fact, I find that interview really embarressing. Here's why: 

"Stay true to myself and dig deep to pull out some of the messages or perspectives that I have on the world" - I'm sorry, what? Is she serious? Honey, you're a bubblegum, puppet pop singer. Tell me a song of hers that delivers an embedded political, cultural message? Her records are fun, light-hearted and basic - which is absolutely fine, so long as she commits to it. Yes, she may 'write' of feeling and love, but that's hardly a profound perspective on the world. 

She's clearly trying to be more Gaga here, and frankly, it's not working; and nor will it ever. Gaga is a true artist, the truest, most talented, artist of our generation. Put simply, there will be another Katy. There are loads of Katy's. There is one Gaga, and there will only ever be one Gaga.

No song on ARTPOP carries a political message, in fact only 2 Gaga songs do that Americano and Born This Way so I don't see why you make that a requirement?

If you want meaningful songs she has plenty, Who am I living for, Pearl, It Takes Two, Choose Your Battles being a few

Most, if not all, of Gaga's songs are culturally or politically grounded. She never writes of empty, airy-fairy themes. 

I think it's fair to place either as a requirement for a true, profound message. Singing about choosing your battles is a great, relatable story to tell, but it's not particularly artistic or groundbreaking. I've never expressed anything against Katy - I, in fact, enjoy her as a pop performer - I simply argue against this authentic, artistic image she's painting in this interview. It's not true. Where is it?

She's a fun pop artist (just like Taylor, for example), and there is nothing wrong with that.

Bloody oath! Katy just got lucky. She's everything that's wrong with modern music today. It's all just numbers to them. Gaga has big balls and gave us her blood, sweat and tears to get to where she is today. Katy has nothing important to say.

I know right? Why does Katy feel the need to present herself to be something she is not? She is sugar pop personified and she shouldn't feel bad for it! She never says anything political or cultural, but like, you know, is relatable.

The thing is : I'll always be dancing to her songs and loving the fun that she brings to pop music, but she'll never be interesting enough for me to actually care about her. She's like this fun friend you love going out with on a Friday night, but you wouldn't be here with her during daytime having real conversations.
