I'm surprised this went viral, people do this in yearbooks all the time. I had a lot of Nguyen's in my high school, no one ever questioned if they were related because the last name is just so common that it didn't really phase anyone. Just with the last name "Smith".

Yes because quotes are too overrated.

If you're talking about OP, there is an issue with making threads since the ddos attacks. Sometimes you can only post link or just lose everything.

You wouldn't ask everyone with the last name Smith if they were related, would you?

So when some Reddit comments asked why the Vietnamese surname is so common, informed Redditors offered an impromptu history lesson.

When the Nguyen Dynasty seized power in Vietnam in the early 19th century, its leaders "awarded" the last name to many citizens.

an american wouldnt ask a smith if he is related to so someone else with the same last name because an american would know. How the hell is an american supposed to know Nguyen is the vietnamese Smith equivalent.

Way to blow out of proportion something that was probably meant as a joke.

Aren't you blowing this out of proportion with your comment? Did you even read the whole article?

Maybe it's time we get to know each other better and find out the most common surnames in different countries. I wouldn't ask two Hispanic people with surname like Sanchez, are you related?

Wouldn't they also be "standing up" to their black classmates? And their Hispanic classmates? And all their non-Vietnamese classmates?
