Do you think having Gaga tribute to Bowie is not enough respect for him?

This article more or less detailed a bunch of ways why Gaga IS a good person to do a tribute but then ultimately said it shouldn't be Gaga because it's Gaga.

The author has a clear bias against her.

The whole article is like saying "I am hungry. I want a fruit that is red, that is crunchy and sweet, perhaps a little tart. Preferably it should be grown on a tree. But I don't want an apple. My hunger is greater than that."

And then they propose a montage as the way to present his career?!

So a person performing his songs, showing the impact of them on the future generation, showing how they have literally influenced someone to follow their dreams, means less than making a ****ing video that anyone could do and upload to Youtube nowadays?

Who wants to walk out of watching the Grammy Awards saying "Wow, that video of Bowie was really great."
Furthermore- why not both? Why does it have to be one or the other? Gaga or something different? ****, do it all if you really wanna honor the guy.

This article is bogus.

Bowie never EVER praised Gaga in any way and even though he is one of Gaga's biggest inspirations, it doesn't mean she should have done it.

Bowie hasn't said very much publically about anyone in recent years  it looks like his last interview was in 2006. He was quite private man not the sort to go on twitter saying things about Gaga.

How is this tribute any different to the Frank Sinatra tribute?

Well, wasn't the Frank Sinatra tribute by Gaga just one part of an entire show in tribute to him? My point is, it's going to be hard to do a tribute to him justice when it's restricted to one single performance by one artist.

Like I said, I'm still looking forward to the performance but I can see it being hard to pull of when she's the only one paying homage through performance that night.

Okay. Well, my opinion remains the same : they should have picked someone closer to him.

Something people are forgetting is that Gaga gave up two planned performances of her own music, when she was asked to do this tribute for her idol.

Gaga is doing the very OPPOSITE of "making this about herself"!

She changed her plans and canceled her planned performances to pay tribute to an artist she respected greatly. I expected no less from someone like Gaga!

I read a ton of comments about this on Reddit. Most people were really supportive.

A few people suggested others they wished it could be. I dont remember all of them, but among them were:

-Trent Reznor, Annie (Lennox I presume), Arcade Fire, Lorde, and a band called St. Vincent [something or other.] Sorry,  don't remember.

They didn't seem like pressed Madonna fans, though, lol. A good point someone had was that, in choosing Gaga, with the recent praise and hype especially, it will draw a larger viewing audience, especially among younger viewers, and in doing so, will expose a great many people to Bowie and what he was all about so that his legacy lives on that much more. Gaga has that power.

I would love to see Trent Reznor perform... but I don't think he has as big of a pull as Gaga right now. After the performance,  I think most will realize why she was the best choice. And I'm willing to bet she will make (would have made) Bowie himself feel honored.

Who would you recommend?

I think they stuck with people who were already going to be performing, and out of those options Gaga certainly was the best candidate. And perhaps they did reach out to people close to Bowie and they refused- we don't know the whole story.
Not to mention, putting on a performance takes a lot of planning, hiring people, etc. It's usually the performer's own teams, not the award ceremony team, that puts the creative aspects together.
You can't expect someone to be able to pull together an entire tribute performance at the drop of the hat; at least Gaga already had aspects of a performance ready to go that could be manipulated into a tribute instead.

Trent Reznor would be ****ing amazing. He already performed with Bowie, if I remember correctly, so we're certain at the very least Bowie likes and respects him as an artist. Annie Lennox would be ****ing rad, though.

Only downside to Trent is that a lot of his stage wow-factor nowadays is attributed to the technological side of things; it's not a BAD thing, but I don't think it would work for a Bowie tribute. (Trent's shows live are amazing and the tech side of things is absolutely impressive so I hope I'm not sounding as though I'm bashing his performances!)
Also, I don't know that Trent himself would be a good embodiment or representation of Bowie on stage.
But honestly, if it wasn't Gaga the only other people doing something I'd support would be Annie Lennox (a great option I didn't even think of!) or Annie collaborating with Reznor.

REALITY

Well, I mean, what other options are there? I think that this is a fantastic opportunity to show people Bowie's legacy, I don't think that this performance is necessarily about Gaga, and it's really not. As the O.P. states, it's about Bowie and his legacy.

Not to mention, this tribute is being done by one of his biggest fans. I mean, it isn't just another random pop star who's a "fan" of his work.

This fanbase is already making it more about her than Bowie. I don't think Gaga is taking a self-centred approach though, she always approaches tribute performances in a way that keeps in line with the artist she's tributing.

I just hope Gaga doesn't feel the need to dress up like she is older than she is to get treated with any respect.
