Uh... Pretty much all pop music is manipulative.

As are a lot of concert ticket prices, but that's just the way it goes. It's your own choice whether or not you listen or go to see the shows. Personally I never had a song stuck in my head out of my control

It's all discourse. She's a popular musician because she represents a particular kind of woman in society that people are familiar with. All the songs reflect struggles, experiences, dilemmas, etc that a particular demographic can identify with. Postmodernism allows an artist to include references that from a classical perspective make no sense. Within the contemporary climate of popular music she's somewhat challenging / subversive toward the mainstream norms that have previously characterized her kind of persona in a particular way, and she's pushing the envelope relatively more than her peers in terms of her own individual scope. But like all popular music artists, she has a reputation to maintain, she always has the choice of doing something different or doing something iconic, and I guess this is iconic? I assume that this gives her the upper hand as her status would be considered cemented, and that would give her the liberty to change the narratives her persona is commonly understood to exist within. Whether she wants to take it in alternative / countercultural direction, idk? I think most mainstream artists worry about how and how far they choose to go off the beaten track..

Its not manipulation. She struck a chord because people get off on equating her type of emphasis-on-vocals-minimalism with "real music". She provided a stark contrast to the gaudy immaturity and asinine repetitiveness of pop music these days and it snowballed to the massive success of 21 and 25. Is her music truly the absolute best? I wouldn't say so. But its utterly simple, sounds classic enough for the layman, and its without gimmick. Plus, there are a lot of people that are only about  vocals and she provides for them in spades. Therefore her success is now bonafied.

Personally, once upon a time I liked 19, I even liked the singles from 21. But shes played the **** out. Like holy ****. When I hear the intro to Rolling In the Deep I vomit in my mouth. I absolutely loathe her, not because I think shes crap, but because top 40 radio takes decent songs and drops them from a 60 story building and then grinds their remains into the asphalt. And generally the typical consumer is too tasteless to be any the wiser.

Nop. It's just an amazing album. Get over it. :crossed:

No not at all. Hell it doesn't even presents an ounce of anything interesting. Hello's sound was predictable just like the rest of 25.

I think it's the difference between singer and artist. I think she's both but less of an artist than a singer... BUT she is still artistic and I can't deny that she cares about her work. I find her more pleasing to listen to than someone I seek out.

While I do not think that a song's merit is determined solely by whether the audience can empathise with the subject matter, I do think that a song's ability to evoke memories or emotions in its listeners is what makes it great. As Adele herself said, no one would by songs about celebrities being rich and famous, as they would not be at all relatable .

And while it is easy to say that Hello is just a break-up song (which it isn't--it's a make up song), it takes great skill to tell the story of the song in as effective a way as Adele has. Yes, the words and the rhymes are simple, but that is by design; it not only allows for a greater audience to connect with the message of the song, but also appeals more directly to one's basic, primal emotions.

Also, I don't wish to be facetious, but I am incensed by the fact that the title of the thread has absolutely nothing to do with the OP's argument. The thread's title deals with Ms Atkins' singing ability, whereas the OP's post criticises her song-writing. One can very well be an excellent singer without writing a single lyric...

Anyone is entitled to do that, I don't think Adele is cheating.

A lot of songs have repetitive lyrics and tunes as well so she's not the first one who did that.
