White actors, particularly in the U.S. and U.K., would use black face to mock Black people through racist stereotypes. It has a longstanding negative history and is still today incredibly offensive. (That's not to say she was doing Black face, but bc of Black face history, this look could be easily misinterpreted and seen as offensive. Just providing context, as you asked a question about it.) I know very well what black face is. But I quoted a post about "brown face" which is literally the equivalent of tanning. So what I asked is are there people out there who now consider tanning offensive too alongside with the thousands of things that became racist and problematic in 2015. But most fans seem to take it seriously and say that she "went too far" or looked "ugly" (while I think that was precisely the point). The Fame was all about presenting the perfect pop star, a bit too perfect so that it exposed the dynamics of pop culture and what people expect of them: a living social commentary while benefiting from the standard herself (genius). And of course it was for a photo shoot that is also quite unpopular here: the Mario Testino shoot for V Magazine (appropriate timing, I guess): pics in spoiler below. Hide contents I make this because I saw some members referring to how disastrous this look was the other day, so clearly the resentment still lives on this forum. Which is kinda confusing because when she looks like this, nobody complains: So what is it about this look? Why is this considered too "far" or "ugly" for her when she has, imo, obviously done a lot more to look off-putting? Why doesn't the "she's making a statement" factor work for this one? Discuss The people who don't like this look were either one of the below: (at least for me) a) not around during The Fame era, so have no concept of what its about. b) have no artistic understanding to what she is doing and therefore cannot appreciate this masterpiece. c) lack taste. d) all of the above. Probably going to get heat for the above but its true. These looks and that photoshoot were iconic and flawless! Warholian 6,880
I sort of love the tan. Very strange but somehow it works. Kevin Parker, Mac Demarco, Mark Ronson, and a stoned Lady Gaga. Need I say more?
