Arizona woman shoots victim in eye for not believing in God

An Arizona woman reportedly told police that she shot another woman for having a lack of religious faith. The suspect said that she kept the victim’s body as a “shrine from God.”

Phoenix officers were called to the home of 39-year-old Anitra Braxton on Dec. 26 and discovered a body on her couch covered in a towel after obtaining a search warrant, KSAZ reported.

During an interview at police headquarters, Braxton explained that the victim did not believe in God so she shot her in the eye, the police report said. She then kept the victim’s body on her couch for three days, calling it a “shrine from God.”

Braxton was charged with first-degree murder. The body had not yet been identified. Police said that evidence suggested the victim had been pregnant.

This is disgusting.  She clearly has a mental illness, an issue common in these sort of cases. I'm in no way trying to justify what she did but cases like this illustrate the lack of social understanding and support for one's mental well being. I just can't help but think how those close to her could fail to see that she needed help; then this mess wouldn't have happened.

Before everyone makes a mess here, Religion is a double-edged sword. It can be a used for you to become a very loving and understanding person or it can make you a mess like that woman is. It's the fault of the person that she cannot make sound decisions and is not able to weigh the consequences of her actions.

It's a framework for spirituality. It's not innately negative or evil.

Organized religion is a construct like any other human group. 

It can be twisted, abused, and radicalized like any other group. This includes all political parties and ideologies, all races and ethnic groups, etc... 

Nationalism itself, a wholly secular ideology, has had a much bigger impact on warfare than religion ever has.

Religion only seems to be front and center because of current events. 

It doesn't help that radicalized Islam has been the topic du jour of the last decade or so. Before that it was poltical ideologies (monarchies, democracy). It was ethnicity (slavery, naziism). The expansion of the Roman Empire wasnt religious. Even the so called Islamic Empire expansion wasn't religious. Religion was nothing more than a pretext for imperialism and ideological zealotry. 

It's us and them. It always has been.

In truth, religion has contributed more to the organization of civilization than any secular law. Your own morality, shaped by your upbringing in society, is based on social and judicial laws which in turn were based on religious moral codes.

fyi, I'm not even religious. I just accept that Christianity has had an impact on my moral character. I also understand that it is being misconstrued and misused. It may be a force that I'm not entirely happy with nowadays, and I'm not at all letting organize religions irresponsibility in the last century off the hook. but to claim that it is innately bad is naive and ignorant of the part it has played in shaping human civilization. 

Like everything in life, it is bad if taken to the extreme. Nothing more. Nothing less.

Of course religion has had an impact, but so did Hitler. That doesn't mean the inhumane practices should be allowed to continue.

People don't need it to live ethically and forget that rules like "don't kill", "don't betray" etc. are not invented by religions, they are appropriated thousands of years ago by them.
