Pierre 10,480 Posted December 7, 2015 Share Posted December 7, 2015 For the first time in years, the opposition to the United Socialist Party of Venezuela, the party of the deceased former President Hugo Chavez, won the vast majority of the seats up for grabs, the opposition coalition, known as the Democratic Unity Roundtable, won 99 seats of the 167 seats in the National Assembly that were all up for grabs, according to the National Electoral Council. The ruling United Socialist Party of Venezuela — which prior to today held 96 seats — won only 46 contests. A lawyer on Sunday became the first openly transgender person elected to the Venezuelan National Assembly in the history of the congress. Popular Will, a left-leaning Socialist party that is pro-LGBT, on its Twitter page announced that Tamara Adrián had been elected to represent the Venezuelan capital of Caracas. “People are standing in line for hours — eight, nine hours in order to buy a chicken or to buy some meat,” Adrián toldearlier this year as she discussed her campaign. “It’s a very difficult environment from an economic point of view and it has to be addressed from the Parliament.” “We are very pleased with another trans woman in power,” Luisa Revilla Urcia, the first trans elected official in Peru, told Washington Blade. “This is a great triumph, we’re going to fight so that everyone gets respect,” Tamara said during an interview last night. She ran officially under her birth name because in Venezuela, trangender individuals are not allowed to have their gender legally recognized by the state. She won because she was in the in the opossition party and everyone voted blindly for them because we know the other party is worse, but she is ultimately irrelevant, since we have bigger and more important issues to deal with rn.
