At least in the USA, it's not that they don't hate them for practicing Judaism. They hate the community. Just think of all the stereotypes you see surrounding them. That's the reflection of their community as seen by others. Some people hate "The Jews" because some Jewish person probably did something that hurt them at one point or another, and now they blame the entire community. The hate they receive is often paradoxical. Still, it would be wrong to claim that no Jew has ever done anything bad. The actions of some bad apples leads to the broad negative generalization you sometimes see. Think of Madoff for example. He's Jewish. Those who were affected by him tagged his actions as "Jewish" because Jews are stereotyped as being greedy and what he did defines greed. So that stereotype is perpetuated by people who see the occasional Jewish person be greedy, even when the grand majority are not. So what is a likely cause of some of these hate crimes? Some sociopath probably got mad at a person who they thought was being greedy. They get mad at the person for being "a Jew", and end up attacking them for being "a Jew", when they were actually attacking them for supposedly being greedy, not because they go to a synagogue. I'm willing to bet a lot of these anti-Jew crimes are based on money, given that seems to be the major stereotype I see in American media. One of my fav is that Jews brought the plague to Europe because no Jew died from it. The truth is that Christians weren't as clean as Jews and got the plague easily and faster.
