Why Adele?

Also, this "screaming/shouting" business needs to be addressed... Not just with Adele but with Gaga as well...

First of all, Adele does not "scream." How can someone "scream" and have a vibrato effect at the same time? I think you guys get confused with "screaming" and actually having a head voice, which Adele can pull off quite well... Same with Gaga.

What does screaming have to do with ahving a head voice? I don't even think you even scream from your head voice? :flop:

This video was originally made to bash legend X(which is super uncool) but it provides some good examples of what screaming is in the context of singing.

Hold on, sis.

Her success isn't overrated because she IS successful.

I think that maybe her talent is overrated.

But when we are talking about Bey, her success IS overrated because she hasn't done well the past few years. ( I still love her).

But she has undeniable talent to back it up...

Off topic.. but I think Legend X's performance of 'Mans World' at the Grammys is a moment in music history. F*ck I remember watching that performance; her vocals were stunning/rock n roll. Her screams aren't genuine screams. It's an intentional vocal. Sounds incredible. Just my 2 cents.. that performance is epic.

I agree, some vocalists intentionally scream to add texture to their performances. Nothing wrong with that. :D

She is talented

She writes lyrics

Her voice is amazing

Her tone is very unique

There is something in her voice that's very easy to relate to

She is beautiful in her own way

She is very down to earth

I believe that's enough.

Well in all honesty Adele had a great song (Rolling in the Deep) that truly made her career.  There's also appeal to someone like her.  Lots of hype as well.  Same reason for why people fell in love with Mariah, Celine, etc.  The recipe for success was just perfect for her.

i agree with you somewhat. she sings very good but i mean, 25 isnt that great. part of her massive success now is because she just put on an album after 5 years of nothing. so people buy her because they miss her. if she had put 2 other albums in those 5 years i dont think people would care this much. can she sing, yes she can, but her sound hasnt grown much so its kind of useless. i listen to the album and dont feel like its something new but something liek she wrote on 2011 and didnt include it on 21. hello is the only worthy song.

like someone else said, her success is not overrated, she actually does deserve it. the album, however, is very much overrated to me.

This is basically how I feel about Adele. No disrespect, but I just don't think she's special enough to be getting the sort of hype and exposure she's getting. People seem to act like she's the only person doing what she's doing, but there was never a deficit of this kind of music. It just so happens that she's the only one who is commercially successful and well-known. If I may say so, Adele's not even the best musician the industry has to offer (in regards to the things she's praised for).

Of course, music is subjective. I don't wanna disrespect people who genuinely love Adele's music. Just understand that not everyone is infatuated with her.

Since you know so much about music, I would like to ask you to post examples of some of the musicians you're talking about. I want people to understand where we're coming from.

Finding exact examples can be difficult. I just know its been done before. But here's what I can think of, in my OCD chronological order. ;) Some you may have heard of, others have been strictly British phenomenons, some got big sales, others not. The album I've put beside them is their most successful. Here are a list of female artists who have made albums based on break ups or ballads or both:

Whitney Houston - Whitney Houston

Mariah Carey - Music Box

Alanis Morrisette - Jagged Little Pill

Natalie Merchant - Tigerlily

Norah Jones - Come Away With Me

Katie Melua - Call Off The Search (almost all her albums are good too, check them out)

Amy Winehouse - Back To Black (Frank is also brilliant, she'd still be huge if she hadn't died)

Leona Lewis - Spirit

Rumer - Seasons Of My Soul (this was released just 3 months before 21 and its cover is even very similar!)

Christina Perri - lovestrong.

Lana Del Rey - Born To Die

Emeli Sande - Our Version Of Events

Jessie Ware - Devotion

These albums all involve big voices, ballads and/or break up themes. They incoporate a lot of piano. They are all about the voice and emotion carrying the song and don't rely on any gimmicks to sell the music. All the same things Adele does. Some of them got massive success, others not so much. But the successes tell you that this kind of music is not novel, it has been done before and connected before. So, why do we make Adele out to be the only one who's not relying on gimmicks or the only one making "real music?" All of these artists I listed don't sell albums anymore, one of them is still on their debut and two of them are dead. Out of the live ones...why did the public stop buying their music? Why did some of them release one successful album and then gradually fade out? If this is the kind of music that the public's asking for, why did the sales from these artists similar to Adele just...stop? If the public wants Adele-esque music, these artists are still going, so why do they not have any interest for them now? If you want to listen to Adele-esque music in between her album breaks, there's a whole lot of other artists who can keep you occupied until she returns. So, why did they not go to them? Like I said, Adele has only won success for herself. We don't want her type of music in general, we just want it from her. In a gender parallel move, Sam Smith got a lot of success recently and some even called him the male Adele. Let's face it, that's what 21 would have sounded like if it were by a man. But I think it was just the fact it was a guy being Adele-eque that brought him that attention. I somehow doubt he'll keep this momentum up.

Well she's talented, relatable for the large majority of the population, likeable, she's funny and she doesn't take herself noway as serious as most popular artists.

If anyone is going to be popular, I'm glad it's Adele. I'm actually kind of glad Adele is more popular than Gaga.

Just found this awesome quote in the comment section on a Billboard article about the sales explosion of 25...

"Adele's success is due in part to listeners reacting against the blatant inauthenticity of most top female singers. We have to endure 30-year-old Katy Perry pretending she's a tween, pampered princess Rihanna pretending to be gangsta, and Demi Lovato claiming the death of her dog and great-grandfather prompted her naked Vanity Fair photo shoot. It's basically a bunch of hookers all on the same street corner competing for shrinking revenue. We've even been treated to 57-year-old billionaire Madonna wearing a grill, getting her t!ts out for Interview magazine and calling her white son a n****r. She's one hip hooker .. not! Adele is the antithesis of this gaggle of pop tarts. I'm so glad her album is doing well, there is hope yet."

Adele has a great voice, lyrics people connect to, and music that doesn't get in the way of the songs.   Thats all she needs.  Nobody sits around worrying about how much promotion an artist is doing before deciding if they like their music.  Adele is an artist many people can enjoy, especially people that don't care about all the pop culture baggage often associated with marketing driven pop stars.
