ok but TFM was released in 09 :awkney:

Gaga + Sales + Some form of metric is such a boring topic now. Creates such a negative atmosphere, I really don't care discussing sales unless it's a good thing :saladga:

Gaga x Nicki x Azealia x Ariana x Kesha x Bey

No. For starters, that 16 million figure is The Fame and The Fame Monster, and with BTW being at around 7 million WW, that's pretty consistent. Add that to the fact that album sales have been on a rapid decline these past few years, and the massive amount of single sales Gaga has that launch her well over 100 million records sold worldwide (a number Cyndi never hit). Gaga's also won a lot more Grammys (6 vs 2), and has been able to maintain relevance by branching out into other areas of entertainment. If any pop girl was to be considered the Cyndi of the 2010s, I would say Kesha.

Plus, Katy has also experienced a significant sales decline when taking into account singles and albums. Whereas Madonna's sales increased between her second and third album, Katy's decreased, as did her singles. So neither comparison is valid IMO.

Yeah but TF-TFM is considered one era, because TFM is extended play fromt he first. I know Katy s sales are not great, but she sustained her album sales with Prism selling about 4,5 mil until now, not too far from her previous albums.

Her management dumped her and she was battling depression and addiction. Get over ARTPOP. It would have been a 6m seller without a shadow of a doubt if she had a manager. After applause gypsy was lined up, then venus replaced it as the single, then dwuw replaced venus but didn't have a video then we had a blackout.

If there had been management, she would have filmed a dwuw video quickly sans Richardson and the song would have gone top 5 for more than a month. The album would have done well off the back of that.

Anyone that thinks otherwise clearly spends their spare time licking windows.

Gaga and Cyndi have a lot in common, their commercial sucess is not one of those things. Cyndi never had Gaga's level of sucess in terms of sales and fame, in turn I don't think Gaga has achieved a catalog of songs that are as timeless as Cyndi's. Time After Time, True Colors, and Girls Just Wanna Have Fun have an eternal quality about them that Gaga's songs do not.

I respect both of them so much for honoring their creativity above all else, unlike Madonna or Katy Perry, Cyndi and Gaga are motivated primarily by their creativity as opposed to commercial sucess. Cyndi leaving Pop music for Blues, Gaga leaving Pop music for Jazz.

They both dramatically changed the way their peers dressed during their respected eras in Pop music. Suddenly everyone was in a Cyndi Lauper costume, in the way everyone suddenly was in a Gaga costume a few years ago.

The content of their music is heavily focused on outsiders, particularly members of the LGBT community. Cyndi's two most successful records She's So Unusual and True Colors were obviously focused on self acceptance in the same way Gaga's Born This Way album was.

Gaga and Cyndi are hands down the most active LGBT advocates pop music has ever seen, and likely ever will. They are legitimately activists.

Gaga and Cyndi are incredible, and I hope they work together soon, they really do have a lot in common.

No because it was easier to sell albums when Cyndi was doing it, Gaga by doing those numbers is much bigger than Cyndi was.  She doesn't come close to Gaga.

Teenage Dream sold way more than 4.5M.

LIES! Roar and Dark Horse are her top two most iconic and successful singles so far!

An extended play is a standalone piece of work, and since The Fame and The Fame Monster received two different Album of the Year nominations at two different Grammys ceremonies, they're two different eras.

I think another thing about these two comparisons that is inaccurate is that you're implying that the sales climate of the 80s is exactly like that of the late 00s and the early 10s. It's not. Album sales have been on a consistent decline since the mid-2000s, and single sales rose drastically from from the mid-2000s to about 2014. So selling the amount of albums Gaga did in the first two years of her debut is an indicator that she was much bigger vs Cyndi pulling those numbers in the early 80s because pulling those numbers on an album was much easier. And Gaga's latest album (Cheek to Cheek) pulled higher numbers in 2014 & 2015 than Cyndi's 4th album.

Gaga is very similar to Cyndi in a lot of aspects. Not so sure for their commercial success yet, though. Let LG5 come out first, and we'll see how well it'll do. Then we'll decide.

Firework has outsold both of these, though (that 13 million figure for DH includes streaming). Added to the fact that the Teenage Dream era sold over 60 million records, and Prism sold 34 million, Katy did decline. Not saying she's flopping by any means, but her follow-up to her peak era sold less records. That happens to everyone.

No, the reason why Cyndi went under radar was because she simply didn't want to do any appealing mainstream pop music and that was exactly what Madonna aimed for. A while ago Gaga said "people want to hear fun pop songs like bad romance and poker face" and I guess that means Gaga is making commercial pop music like she used to. Gaga will have more success next era if she wants to. (imo making mainstream pop music is not bad thing it doesn't mean you have to be unoriginal or lame!)
