Pro-refugee German politician victim of Neo Nazi terrorist attack

While xenophobic and Islamophobic attacks have shown a drastic increase in Germany following the country's decision to accept hundreds of thousands of refugees, the attacker who stabbed pro-refugee mayor candidate of Cologne Henriette Reker turned out to be a neo-Nazi as suspected.

According to German press outlets, the 44-year old attacker Frank S., who was unemployed and was receiving social pensions, was an active member of Freiheitliche Deutsche Arbeiter Partei (Free German Workers' Party / FAP), which was banned by the German Constitutional Court in 1995 due to violent and racist rhetoric.

Yes, luckily all of the five injured people - two of them severely - will survive. And this horrible incident is of course with the refugees crisis top news here in Germany.

This is horrible! Also, I think "The far right is gaining popularity" is an exaggeration.

It was especially weird being in Cologne as an Erasmus student and seeing her face everywhere and suddenly turning on the news and thinking "Where do I know that name from?".

I meant to say "the rise of the far right", because technically it has become a larger movement in some countries, but it isn't as if they're dominating in any shape or form. Their policies are way too literally alienating and aggressive to have any friction with the majority, so I wouldn't worry about the far right becoming dominant. Some far right parties are terrible at promoting themselves, such as VB in my country. They don't come across as sympathetic or someone you would want anything to do with. That party has become a lot smaller than in the 90s though. Then again, in France, the FN is tragically popular, but that party is killing itself.

Enfin, Neo-nazi attacks like these should be condemned, but I wouldn't frame them within "the rise of the far right" because that is simply not something to be really worried about.

It is rising, because those areas are becoming more diverse in their population. Certain parts of Europe were more "tolerant" when the population was less diverse. This was a natural progression that was bound to happen as the population changes, and it will continue in this direction for years and years to come.
