This kind of debate always ****s me up because on one hand I respect Katy's often underestimated talent enough to say she deserves all the praise she gets, but on the other hand I also think she deserves all the criticism she gets.

I look at the people listing all the things that make Katy a joke and I agree, then I look at the people listing all the things that make her valuable and I also agree. :smh:

Katy, the dichotic and paradoxal chanteuse.

Fixed :kissga:

Katy is playing the industry game just like everyone else. Shes just damn good at it. No shame in that..... some people have other aspirations and want to make a difference .

Born To Slay

Is no one wondering why feminism is even in a discussion about Katy supporting Hilary?  Just because Hillary has a chance to be the first female president doesn't it make it a feminist issue.

Bad Bromance

What is it with the critics and media thinking Taylor Swift did a "180 degree change" .... her sound was Pop as **** in most of Red's singles...

And a whole lot of her other songs before that

Agreed, but her "brand" was that of a country singer and I think most people associated Taylor Swift with country music.

I don't care what you think about unless it is about me.

Probably the same children that considered Camp Rock a movie about a real rock band called the Jonas Brothers

But I'm only a man and I do what I can.

This article & writer already got dragged to the pits in the comment section and Twitter already, so I guess what I was planning to say already has said. However, contrary to what the article said, Katy has a specific model/theme/trait. Bubblegum, lighthearted, and happy pop music, vibrant, colorful and cartoony looks/image & performances, and candy imageries/outfits all are associated with Katy in pop music and culture. When people think of those stuff, Katy comes to their mind. Not all her songs are what the writer described. The writer obviously only has listened to I Kissed a Girl, California Gurls, Teenage Dream, Firework, and Roar (which still have meaning and just because they are fun doesn't mean that they are pointless). One of the Boys, Thinking of You, Mannequin, Lost, Self Inflicted, I'm Still Breathing, Fingerprints, I Think I'm Ready, A Cup of Coffee, Circle the Drain, The One That Got Away, Who Am I Living For?, Pearl, Not Like the Movies, Part of Me, Wide Awake, Unconditionally, Ghost, Love Me, This Moment, Double Rainbow, By the Grace of God, It Takes Two, and Choose Your Battles are all beautiful, deep, complex, and emotional songs with a lot of meaning which really do make you think. Katy's music isn't bland - it's very diverse. Not to mention that all her songs are written by her and they are like her diaries.

Katy does evolve, both by the terms of her style and her music. Just listen to all her albums in full, watch all her tours and performances from each era, and look at her looks & videos form each era. It's more than just some hair color. Katy manages to reinvent herself and evolve while still being vibrant, happy, beautiful, playful, and fun and sending a positive, empowering message. She literally went from a Christian gospel singer-songwriter to an indie rock musician to a pop-rock chick to a pop superstar.

No thanks, I don't want my ears to fall off.

Rude. What's the point of this vitriol?

Since when does any creative expression have to have a point beyond simple entertainment?

Not everyone wants to feel inspired and challenged by everything they encounter in daily life.

It's silly that people here are even acknowledging this article as having any worth to begin with. Didn't you already know all this? This isn't a receipt. This is pointing to the sky and calling it blue. No ****.

Sometimes you just want to sit, relax, and listen to basic music. That's what Katy Perry is for.

Hell, Taylor Swift fits into this category as well. In fact I didn't even like Bad Blood despite it being "different from the norm" or whatever. It's not what I want to listen to when I put on Taylor Swift. I expect the same old love song cause that's what she has always done and what she does best. Style is one of my favorite songs this year.

The basic things in life are the things you often overlook while living your complicated lives and thinking your complicated thoughts about complicated topics while trying to be a complicated person.

Again, that's what Katy Perry caters to. She sings about basic stuff, but you're a goddamn liar if you claim to have never had the same basic thoughts.

As a side note, Katy Perry's video for "One That Got Away" is one of the few videos for a pop girl that have ever made me shed a tear. I'll admit that and give credit where it's due, unlike most of these "complicated" people that write articles like these in some desperate attempt to satisfy some superiority complex.

How much Country music have you bought and listened to in your life? How many Country concerts have you been to?

Taylor may be a pop artist right now (who, by the way, still writes most of her songs like a country artist), but there is no doubt that she started out as a Country music artist and fit comfortably in that genre for most of the last decade.

Psychedelic

This might be true but what's the point of attacking someone's ways of entertaining in such a way and you guys rejoicing about it?

This isn't 2013 anymore, let go of Ms Perry for your own mental sake!

New York Magazine's lack of substance is showing as they hired a journalist who has the a--lytical skills of a kid super fan of some other pop star...

Just because Katy decided to support Hilary's campaign? And somehow this isn't feminist enough? Feminism has been turned into a tarp to wrap over your car, stretched every which way when I thought it was about gender equality... You know, equal rights, equal pay for the same jobs, equal representation in office, culture, and business? However, these days it is just another talking point pitting women against each other, eating at the very thing that would benefit them for generations if they came together and supported each other.
