Didymus 34,380
Actually, come to think of it, I would be very into rock influence if it was anything like the following three artists/bands: Porcelain Black Evanescence Linkin Park (Meteora era) In a way, I'm not totally against the genre if it's done well or in a unique and groundbreaking way. Early Linkin Park was my first favorite in music, and they incorporated genres such as rap and a minuscule bit of pop influence in as well. Evanescence was wonderful while they lasted, and I wouldn't mind Porcelain Black/and the Tramps-like productions either like you mentioned is possible with RedOne's touch. I know they would mesh very well. However, despite this, the rock attitude isn't my thing. It's kind of messy, and I'm not into messy. There's something about a falsified pop attitude which Gaga was known for that's so coordinated and dominating. I'd prefer her to save the rock attitude for clubs or whatever, but rock is a respected genre among many generations and her badass pop attitude (when she cares about dominating the world of pop) would garner her a lot of respect when paired with rock/metal influence. It's odd to lead a career of pop, star on one of the most watched shows on television and then have a pure "**** the mainstream" attitude. Understood, and I really get what you're referring to, but that stereotype about the "rock attitude" is seriously outdated Especially in recent years when more alternative rock/metal acts emerged on the scene who didn't even bother changing regular clothes for the stage. They act normal, they just care about their music and those are usually the bands who have the highest artistic merit because they don't need to hide behind a "**** YEAAAHHH" façade mixed with the usual glorification of s-x and d--gs (which, really, very few current bands do anymore, thank god). In fact, when you look at the best reviewed albums each year, there's bound to be rock and metal albums very high up in the list. What you mention: "if it's done well in a unique and groundbreaking way" - every single year at least 20 of those are released and noticed by the critics (and a lot more of them unnoticed). I only need to think of bands like Diablo Swing Orchestra, Bring Me the Horizon, Every Time I Die, Sun O))), Sigh, Opeth,... who, among hundreds of others, embody the idea of a rock/metal band that cares, above all, about the quality of their music (and their lyrics). So there really is a lot happening in the genre and I do think it's fair to say that nowadays rock and/or metal fans aren't really seen anymore as just people who want to seem edgy and rebellious, those fanbases usually have a much higher demand on integrity and quality than a pop fanbase (trust me lmao). I guess Gaga's personal favorite, Iron Maiden, is the best example for what a legendary metal band can be though they absolutely do not in any way conform to the stereotypical rock gods. Not their attitude but their compositions became legendary, their lyrics are complex and if not deep at least creative, their line-up has been stable for decades, they have always been respected for their solemn and dedicated attitude and they simply kept releasing no matter how rich they eventually became, and only rarely got criticized by critics or fans. Their last record, which came out two weeks ago, is by many said to be their best, even though it's released 40 years after their debut. It's an instant commercial success, like any of their albums, because people know they deliver. Just one example

Didymus 34,380
Evanescence Loooove me some Evanescence though! They were actually one of two bands (the other was Within Temptation) that got me into metal music. And Evanescence specifically got me through some tough times That's another thing I like about rock/metal music, the lyrics often deal with lots of heavy emotion in a sense that.. they're allowed. The song doesn't have to end with a "but hey, I'm fine and tomorrow's a new day" lyric or whatever. Which is why Evanescence's album Fallen had such a big impact on me, it was the first album that made me accept the feeling of: "I'm going under" without trying to hide or soften it. In that sense the genre really offers something few other genres can. If you're up for it of course. I guess it does demand a special sort of personality to want to listen to songs that don't try to make you feel better Which is why Gaga won't go there at this point of her career. I don't think that's what she wants for her fans. Hmm, never really thought about it that way

It's an instant commercial success, like any of their albums, because people know they deliver. Just one example Those are all very good points and I had no idea that it was so complex, I didn't even know the the rock complex stereotype I was referring to was a stereotype at all, although that particular attitude within rock is unsavory to me, and not rock attitudes as a whole...potentially. Like I said, I'm not well versed on this. I don't listen to rock music. I'm going to be perfectly honest and say that my dislike of rock music for the most part is instilled deeply in me from my upbringing and life. This all might seem a bit strange, but here it goes. My dad is very into rock music and always has been. I don't enjoy relating to him because of the personal issues between us and it affects my enjoyment of the music. I've been moderately conditioned to occasional misandry because throughout my life, I have always been mistreated, for the most part, by men, and it's taking time to rebuild my attitude on this because it is so deep in my nature not to trust men due to the immense amount of harassment I've had growing up. It's partly on me for feeling this way. Rock is a genre dominated by men, and I can't name many men I know who don't listen to rock. I can't relate to these lyrics as I cannot relate to being a male (probably accentuated by my opposition to masculinity from being a transwoman) and this makes me disgusted with the genre. Also, all of my exes were big rock fans and to think of listening to the music they do makes me sick to my stomach. I can't listen to rock music without feeling depressed if somebody's memory is attributed to it. Pop music is a very female dominated genre and I feel comfortable with it. It's so hard to separate men from rock and women from pop. I absolutely know it's ridiculous, but when the misandric side of me flares out, I sometimes find women who listen to rock to be "assimilating" to the desires of men and sacrificing their femininity at its worst. I confess how unhealthy this is and I'm being truthful in saying this is the non-sonic reason I don't like rock music. It's a mix of misandry and stereotyping. But it's very strong and has affected the genre for me on a personal level. My latest ex was extremely into metal music and he ended up being highly transphobic, kicked me out of his house and told me to kill myself by going into traffic. So there's an added association that's detestable and contributes to this awful way of thinking that rock = men = misogynistic = transphobic. :c

Didymus 34,380
It's a mix of misandry and stereotyping. But it's very strong and has affected the genre for me on a personal level. Thanks for sharing that, that was a lovely read. I never had that experience with music where it was connected to memories and trauma's etc. but I can totally imagine how it could work and how you could choose to avoid an entire genre because of it. Now it makes sense. & I'm happy you found a genre that makes you feel comfortable and empowered & I'm very sorry for that horrible experience at the end.. No one deserves that. It actually got me thinking that there is a very strong anti-gay bias in the metal community in the sense that metal music that comes too close to being catchy and radio-friendly is often called "gay". This is probably not very grave since one of the most famous and respected metal vocalists ever (Rob Halford) came out as gay and no one cared, but I can absolutely imagine that a few bad experiences with metal fans can make you turned off for life. What a great point on the anti-gay bias being a nuance of the metal community. I also find that among some rock/metal audiences there can be a sense of elitism, which when mixed with that gender/genre dynamic I spoke of does not help with how I feel about the musical superiority complexes of some rock listeners, and equates as a sort of patriarchal dominance to me...which I tend not to like. I flirt with guys sometimes who are total rock listeners and when I tell them I write pop music, the air changes. They tend to look down on me. But I think a lot of people have a close minded view on pop music as well, because my interpretation of pop through my writing (like the more underground pop/alternative artists) is different from the usual top 10, but still marketable and relatable...deep, to put it that way. My own father criticizes pop music but supports my pop songwriting, so it puts me at a disconnect with the rock genre because it's like "What makes that genre better than mine...?" and it's interesting when I show the lyrics of underground pop artists to rock fans and they're surprised to see there's genuine emotion and value. There's elitism and stereotyping in abundance in some of those rock communities, but also in any non-pop genre...even pop. You were spot on that metal artists thrive on quality. I think that's why it's so hard for some metal fans to open up, because to go from those complex lyrics to listening to "Stupid Hoe" as many people generalize as representing pop music is quite a contrast and lots of people don't think these sub genres can be musically and/or lyrically impressive. I wasn't looking for a pity party, just genuine understanding of how I feel. It's kind of embarrassing, actually. I'm glad you got my point.

Born Brave 2,072
Gaga said recently that she is excited for the next generation of fans (monsters) that this new music will bring. Im hoping that also means some of the derogatory people in this thread are weeded out once and for all too Further more I say this to the people who say she cant - SHE CAN she wont - SHE WILL IF SHE WANTS TO she shouldn't - LEAVE
LoveandMagic 1,731
I would personally love it (and it's what she started out doing) BUUUUUUUT I think she's said or hinted a few times that she's still doing pop (maybe with disco or rock influences) and I'm okay with that too. Rock is what she started out doing, and she clearly has a passion and talent for it, so maybe one day. I think it's so cool that so many rock legends like her.As for AHS, since we know it will influence her music I do see the return of Glam Dark-ga. Maybe an infusion of BTW/TFM aesthetics with a bit more disco/metal? I would dig it.Of course, as always, she could be completely trolling us. LOL. Just repeat to yourself, "It's just a show. I should really just relax."
Born Brave 2,072
I frankly dont know why ya'll havent already learned the obvious. Let me enlighten everyone wanting Gaga to listen to her fans again- IMMEDIATELY after Born This Way people clamored for TFM 2.0 "Gaga needs to make another The Fame Monster" Wellllll she did. In all it's techno raver sisterhood glory that said hello in glowsticks ARTPOP was born and then it didn't do so hot and then everyone got butt hurt. The truth is ya'll all think you know what's best for her and that ya'll know how to achieve the ultimate commercial success because ya'll have this ill informed idea of what commercial success looks like and have convinced yourselves that the commercial success is all that matters- why? because you dont want your precious little feelings hurt when a "Swifty" or a "Katy Cat" is able to say "WE BEAT GAGA, AHAHAHAHA". That is the most superficial way to look at the creation of art and music and in the end it's never gratifying enough for you anyways so JUST LET HER DO HER OWN DAMN THING. Whats GOOD GAGADAILY? StarryNight 10,106
I'm here for power ballads I don't think she could pull of pure metal/rock album just yet, album that is influenced by it or some mixture that's more likely you have some good points there but we can only still speculate about it, mysteryGa is here to stay
LoveandMagic 1,731
I have mixed feelings about this. On one hand, she could make this ballad rock American music (You & I or MANiCURE or something like that) which could definitely make me throw away my stan card for some time, as I never have liked the music. Well, I'm OK with the aesthetic, but not so with the sound. HOWEVER, if she manages to pull off some high quality jittery electronic rock, in a way how artists like Justice and Kavinsky do it, I'll be forever and EVER grateful. Songs like Mary Jane Holland and Aura are pure electronic-rock-house-pop perfections. And if she makes rock music through the modern electronic pop aesthetic, I'm sure it will be great, as it not only would mean that Gaga is once again dipping her toes into new waters, but her music would also stand out from the whole sweet, dreamy and somewhat mild pop sound which is rather popular on the radio. And if she even dares to infuse some disco into the mix, it will be pure French House perfection. Imagine something like this coming from Gaga Mmmhmmm. You need to listen to some Love Metal, no misogyny there. This hatred for metal...I don't get. Metal and rock are huge genres. I'm cool with people not like the "sounds" but it can be a diverse genre. Plus there's a lot she can do with the aesthetic. I frankly don't care what genre she does next, I'd love some metal, some rock, some psychedelic funk, but it's Gaga. It will be amazing no matter what she does. Bring forth that Disco Metal Electronic Funk Soul Punk Pop Jazz Dance album I crave! Just repeat to yourself, "It's just a show. I should really just relax." Guest
I'll just leave this here...... Notice how this version sounds completely different from the album version? .... THIS IS NOT ELECTRONIC MUSIC....... It's ROCK. I wish the album version was more rock.
