I think some of the picks in the 50's and 40's could have been a little higher.

Because it's a list of the best songwriters, not singers. Beyonce is a co-writer on basically all her songs, so if Rolling Stone isn't praising her, despite all her success and Grammys, it really must be true - she just claims writing credit for stuff she doesn't create. It's not speculation, there's concrete evidence for it, of which I've presented many a time.

Honey this was sarcasm. I know that. I just found the list to be totally ****ty and I was being ironic

Dissing people in a rap does not equal to good songwriting, therefor Eminem should not be there.

obviously you haven't listened to his music because that's not all he does. Just like gaga doesn't only write about being called legs and having someone buy her eggs in the morning/ getting a spray tan

Mariah songs are generic love ballads. You could interchange a 90's Mariah, Whitney, and Toni Braxton hit song and nobody would bat an eye at lyrics seeming uncharacteristic.

Gaga, Katy, and Taylor show much more individuality as songwriters.

First of all, she's done plenty of uptempo and midtempo songs too. :trollga:

She does write a lot about love, but that's a common subject in songwriting anyways. I'll argue that she does have a distinctive style sometimes. She can get very descriptive when it comes to love. Sometimes she sings about ~deep~ topics as well.

Lyricism is just one aspect of songwriting. The other is the musical aspect. Many people will tell you that Mariah has co-written very catchy and memorable songs. There is a reason why songs like "Fantasy," "All I Want for Christmas Is You," and "We Belong Together" have stayed with many pop fans. I mean... Max Martin is on the list, and I'm pretty sure it's because he's written/co-written catchy pop songs, not because his lyrics are deep.

If you don't think that's enough for me to justify wanting her on the list, then I don't know what to tell you.  :later:

I'm not a woman. I'm not a man. I am something that you'll never understand.

Madonna was a good writer (up until 2005). How much help did she have though? Has she ever even written and produced a song entirely by herself? Meanwhile Kate has written and produced every album since her fourth completely by herself, including Hounds of Love, widely regarded as one of the greatest albums of ALL time. Madonna's music may be more commercially accessible but Kate's lyrics and music are a surrealistic journey covering so many topics no one has ever dared to include in songs. Transforming classic literature into successful, iconic pop songs. Who else but the Queen? They're both good artists but Kate is just on another level :lolly:

Hidden Content

"Madonna is a brilliant pop melodist and lyricist. I was knocked out by the quality of the writing (during Ray of Light sessions), she is a wonderful confessional songwriter, as well as being a superb hit chorus pop writer... She doesn’t get the credit she deserves as a writer."

—Rick Nowels, who co-wrote with Madonna on Ray of Light.

Ray of Light & Like a Prayer are regarded as one of the best albums of all time as well. (as a side note : Ray of Light received widespread acclaim while Hounds of Love's acclaim was mainly coming from Europe)

Madonna wrote and co - produced nearly every song she's ever done. And yes, she did write and produce songs entirely by herself. The most current example would be Hold Tight from Rebel Heart.

I've listened to both of their discographies and in terms of artistic integrity / focus Madonna does not lack in comparison to Kate - they have both accomplished their own aesthetics, Kate might me more naturally gifted, but Madonna beats her in work ethic.

Now, everything I wrote aside, comparing these two is literally the stupidest thing ever.

No Tori Amos?!?!  What a crock.  Her style is so perplexed and whimsical, you would have to know what she was singing about through interviews or familiar with her past.  Her technique is unmatched.

I love Taylor, but her over Gaga?

:bye:

Yep.

Some of her lyrics are pleasing:

Taken from Wonderland:

"You searched the world for something else to make you feel like what we had. And in the end in Wonderland we both went mad."

Taken from All You Had To Do Was Stay:

"People like you always want back the love they pushed aside, but people like me are gone forever, when you say goodbye.”

Also on my sig.

Sister

Bob Dylan is number One, go and search his lyrics if you are not familiar, you can gain a lot of life through your blood if you only do this much with your remaining life.

He wrote Like A Rolling Stone, the most moving, loved and popular song of all time, about Edie Sedgwick, this song is eternity in a record.

The future's uncertain and the end is always near.
