Whitney was praised for her tone, pitch and vocal strength throughout the entire length of this song. 

Michael was praised for his expressive vocals throughout the entire song here as well. 

So no, It's not only about the belting and high notes. 

 

Sorry, but this kinda proves my point. Michael's high notes are after thoughts and Whitney sounds beautiful but her voice shines in her ballads. Very rarely if ever do people cover I Wanna Dance with Somebody as a nationally televised tribute to Whitney. They always tend to cover her ballads. Thats where her voice is on full display. These songs are amazing pop songs btw. I love both Whitney and Michael. 

Here Michael's voice shined like crazy. It goes from slow Ballad to Gospel. I dare anyone to cover Earth Song; they will fail miserably. Same with Whitney singing All The Man I Need. There are some great Whitney covers out there but no one will sing her songs as good as she did. 

I'm not saying pop uptempo songs aren't great. I'm just saying they are not the best to showcase a big voice.

I know you are a big Madonna fan so I am going to use this example. Madonna has had some amazing songs but IMO her voice shines beautifully in her ballads. She perfectly conveyed a sense of sultry, vulnerable, and longing at the same time in Love Don't Live Here Anymore. The reason she sounds so good is because all the other sounds that are usually mixed in into a uptempo pop song are not present in a song like this.

These are all still pop though. My original point was that Pop is divided into far more than just up tempo songs. Hence why I chose to criticized Gaga's unspecificness. I don't see how you've debunked that, but okay. There are up tempo, fastened Jazz songs out there as well.

Pop music is not very melodic unless it's a good pop ballad. A voice doesn't really shine in pop music. Thats why a lot of pop singers have a very limited vocal range and are still very popular. There are a couple of singers i think are wasting there time with pop or have wasted there time with pop.

Mariah Carey

Lady Gaga

Whitney Houston

Deborah Cox

These singers shine when they have a beautiful ballad to sing. One where their voice is the showcase and not the bells and whistles that go with pop music. These singers should take a page from Lady Gaga's hand book and explore other types of music and then put out the contractually obligated pop album. Not necessarily standards Jazz, but something where their voice is the focal point. I love a good pop song but pop doesn't do anything for a truly talented singer.  I don't think Lady Gaga is saying her voice is bad in pop. I think she is saying she can't really use pop as a showcase for her voice.

Yes there is uptempo big band Jazz, but there is nowhere to hide a bad voice on a big band jazz standard or even an uptempo modern Jazz song especially live. As far as proving Jazz and Ballads are where a singer has a chance to showcase their voice, that also was proven.

Ehh. She is a brilliant pop/rock singer, and a burgeoning jazz vocalist. But jazz is a far more (technically) difficult genre to master, so both achievements are incredibly impressive.

 I disagreed with you about Gaga's need "to write and compose jazz music" in order to make a self-assesment of her vocals. Exactly! Gaga's comment wasn't from some hour long in-depth interview! It was a simple statement she made in a quick moment on stage.
