That's perhaps when the backlash began to build, but not when the flops started.

I've always wondered, Gaga had such a huge mainstream following prior to Alejandro. I remember all my GP friends were a fan of hers and had Poker Face, Bad Romance, etc on their phones. She had the most followers on twitter. The GP loved her. She was everywhere during TFM era.

But when the music video for Alejandro was released and she swallows that rosary in that scene, I can't help but think that--that was what made people believe she was "satanic" and an "illuminati puppet". And I specifically remember after the Alejandro music video, when the Born This Way video came out alot of the comments were "Thats it I'm done with her devil a*s", "I'm not a gaga fan anymore" etc

And then that was followed by Judas, and more people left her.

I also went back and asked my old friends and they all said They stopped listening to Lady Gaga after watching the video for Alejandro. One girl even told me she had her "spirit cleansed" after watching the video.. I deleted and blocked her ofcourse. :miley:

Also Alejandro peaked at #5 on Hot 100 and sort of became one of signature songs and after that Born This Way peaked #1 cause of all the hype.. and then the flop train started with Judas and finally Marry The Night becoming her first single to chart below Top 10.

And then the whole 2012 mess of waiting, and then ARTPOP came.

Do you think it all started because of Alejandro and the illuminati rumours?

she looked scary and ugly as hell

Nobody wants to see that tbh + the BTW weirdness and gayness + the outdated preachy music.

Everything after telephone and before ARTPOP made me question my love for gaga, i stayed because of the amazing live performances, but i was so done with how creepy and messy she looked all the time.

I have very similar taste to the so called " GP"

And all my friends left her after Alejandro and loved ARTPOP so...

WTF is MDNA

Alejandro might be her biggest smash in Europe and tons of people love the song, so no. I think what contributed to her downfall was the musicality of BTW, it was very different and a lot less catchy than her previous two albums....also the single choices could have been better.

i will say a LARGE number of the population clearly disliked the videos dark & homoerotic tones, homophobia imo played a VERY big part in it and that's why BTW got a large backlash, sure it got religious backlash but imo people disliked that she was the ONE popstar who walked the walk when it came to gay rights instead of talking the talk and not doing crap all about it. She didn't hide her love of gays in metaphors about independence day celebratory tools or any of that crap she outright said it.

I think also people were thinking, "ok she's been weird when is she gonna transform into a glamorous s-x symbol like every other popstar?" and when she didn't people didn't like it. BUT overall that's just my opinion and we will never know i guess because Alejandro was a euro-pop song and did well here and all over Europe

Alejandro was the last single of the era. Of course it's not going to perform as well as the others. But the video controversy helped her keep her momentum as did BTW's release and hype so soon afterwards. Alejandro wasn't the start of her "flop era" (if you could even call it that) at all because she and her team remedied any damage from it. Now, the end of the BTW era on the other hand...

During Alejandro Gaga definitely changed her look and looked less appealing to put it nicely, and that continued on to the Born This Way era (the horns and the Jay Leno appearance I was really put off my the image alone) but the music was still hyped and good. I think the tipping point was Judas being too "in your face" and the rest is history.

Judas, The Edge of Glory were top 10 and I don't see them as flops. Even You and I sold like 2,500,000 copies in the US alone.

Marry the Night was the beginning but Applause did smash pretty hard, so did Do What U Want with a Platinum certificate, considering it had no music video. So it was only Marry the Night and G.U.Y. which flopped.

Well...Alejandro brought the gay religious controversy before BTW and Judas but yeah...those THREE brought about a pattern of poorly selected singles and that also carries on into the ARTPOP era :saladga:

I hope LG5 gets it right single wise...
