LittIe Monster 274
My god.. my friend told me people skipped school just to hear her announcement. Beyonce is completely overrated. Great and entertaining music, but that's about it.
LoveandMagic 1,731
Where are all these "combative" and "elitist snob" vegans that people seem to be surrounded by? Like...a VAST majority of the vegans/vegetarians I am around and see posting online are actually very pleasant and believe in people making their own choices. I hope the occasional extreme ones aren't putting us all in the same box....Honestly, I see more rudeness from non-vegans when it comes to veganism. I often see them doing the most criticizing, most questioning, and most finger-pointing when the topic of diet gets brought up. They're the first ones to run in and call us dumb, make jokes about eating animals, give us a thousand questions about WHY we made the choice to be veg (usually after they ask us if we are when they notice we don't have meat on our plates), and then try to come up with reasons why our diet is apparently terrible for us before clarifying "Well I could NEVER be vegetarian because ______," as if we were trying to convert them or even gave two ****s about what they ate in the first place.I've literally NEVER seen a vegetarian/vegan sit down and question someone who ordered meat or list off reasons why their food might be bad for them, but I've seen it (and experienced it) the other way around. We all have different experiences. I don't doubt you and I live in different regions. That's my experience. I also said that I didn't think the rude ones represent the majority and I also have friends who are into that lifestyle. I merely brought it up because the pathway to education lies in respect. When anyone is sarcastic, cynical, bitter, rude, snide, or obnoxious to others that don't share their beliefs, others will automatically shut them down.I encounter hostile vegans/vegetarians on campus, at the market, and holding signs on the road and outside of restaurants, and being rude at the table next to me. I've seen them in the comment section of online articles as well. They act very elitist and cold. THAT'S ON THEM AS PEOPLE, NOT VEGANS. I don't blame others for it, but try to point out this behavior so that (in the interest of inspiring others) there might be a little more caution in any approach toward educating the populace about that lifestyle. For instance, I'm an atheist and a feminist. I know the there are a few hostiles out there that give the rest of us a bad name. I don't claim to speak for the majority, but I know the hostile ones are few in number. While I try to correct people (gently and politely) when they misunderstand what being atheist or a feminist is, I don't automatically discount their negative experiences (unless they have an agenda). It however makes me strive to be a more positive and open person when it comes to my beliefs. People DO respond overwhelmingly to that, even if at that moment no difference seems to be made. Just repeat to yourself, "It's just a show. I should really just relax."

As an atheist, feminist, and vegetarian, I totally understand what it's like when a ****ty minority of the group ends up creating an "image" for the majority of the group. Which is why I tend to get a little upset when people talk about militant vegetarians, because I see the opposite in my day-to-day life.

I completely agree and sometimes I too find it hard not to get so frustrated. I think it's a shame that a few vocal minority (and others with an agenda) have misconstrue the truth of the matter and have negatively misrepresented what it means to be all (or any) of the three in our culture to the mass populace. It's disgusting. I'm not a vegan but I respect the decision to be one. Just repeat to yourself, "It's just a show. I should really just relax."
