This is a very popular way for Conservative parties to gain Liberal votes recently.

Is the CDU/CSU the only Christian party? And is there another conservative party besides the CDU/CSU? Does that conservative party support equal rights for s-xual minorities?

If CDU/CSU are the only Christian parties I think that Merkel might try it, or give her party's members the freedom to vote in favour or not depending on what they think themselves.

It's the only christian and conservative party in the parliament. And the only one in the parliament who does not support equal rights. Though voices get louder within the party to make gay marriage. Though the most popular ones are against it. Sadly. But the majority of people who vote them support gay rights as well.

Serendipity

In Germany you need 5% or more of total votes to get into the parliament. It's very hard to 'just' create a new party and actually be successful, and only if you appeal to a new demographic, this will work.

I think maybe a new liberal, secular right-wing party could steal some votes from CSU/CDU and get 5%+ votes

Say someone famous-say Helene starts one to support the gays

Would it work?

Well German conservatives are much different than conservatives in UK or USA. They would be considered as communist as some member once said here :giggle:

They should hold a referendum, they won't make their traditional electorate mad (orthodox and conservative Christians) while doing what the majority of the party does.

No matter what happens, it's a lose-lose situation for CDU/CSU :queenga:

Nope.

A person needs to seem professional, charismatic and trust-worthy to be successful in politics. Ideas are also important. Maybe a well-known column-writer or a former, progressive CDU-/CSU-member could be successful but I really doubt it.

Germany will have to do it with their current parties.

I wouldn't mind CDU/CSU loosing. Greens should take over

They are not conservative if they support it...

It depends what country you are living in. In Germany they are conservative.
