According to a Focus-survey the majority of Germans support marriage quality. Even CDU/CSU-supporters (christian conservative party of Merkel) support it majoritly. 64 % of the citizens support the so called gay marriage. 31 % are against and 5% are not sure. Does that conservative party support equal rights for s-xual minorities? If CDU/CSU are the only Christian parties I think that Merkel might try it, or give her party's members the freedom to vote in favour or not depending on what they think themselves. New parties struggle with members/supporters for years, often decades, the ones holding back (in the past anyway) gay marriage in Germany have been there for a long time and have massive support. It's very hard to 'just' create a new party and actually be successful, and only if you appeal to a new demographic, this will work.
