Sales tax in my Country is 5% at Federal Level... and 0% to 10% at Provincial Level (depending on the Province). But some specific items are exeptions... Like cigarets get taxed more, and some items like milk, bread, fruits and vegetables dont get taxed at all i think like a 30% tax is reasonable... or maybe a tax per unit like they also do with tabacco like taxing different d--gs per gram Yeah... but right now d--gs are too cheap of an alternative to alcohol (€20 for a bottle of wodka compared to like €8 for a pill I believe?) so yeah a tax would be good. Non-basic necessities VAT in my country is 21% (going to be raised to 22% or 23% in the near future I expect) so 30% would be a bit too low . Cheap rums are like $40 for like barely 1 litre Ontario blocked anyone else from selling alcohol. Economy 52,847 Posted May 26, 2015 Share Posted May 26, 2015 messy but good in my country that's impossible because it's near relatively poor countries like Poland and Czech Republic with really cheap alcohol. i dont think that would make it impossible Here its not even a National thing its a PRovincial thing ONLY Ontario does. people can easily drive to another Province if they want and buy alcohol for 1/3 of the price or lower but unless ur live near the border of another Province most ppl arent gonna drive for hours just to buy cheaper alcohol If it works here and we got cheap alcohol in the SAME Country why wouldnt it work in yours because of cheap alcohol in OTHER Countries??? Because a province in Canada is 10x bigger than the Netherlands. If prices are 2x higher in The Netherlands than in Belgium or Germany, millions will simply go to Belgium and Germany. I think a different tax for every individual municipality would work, with lower prices near the borders and higher prices in rich cities. people would be pissed if they charged more in some munincipalities than others. and its not really a tax since the government is the one selling it, they just charge the money they wanna make. U actually dont pay Provincial tax at the LCBO or Beer store, just the Federal tax of 5% and are countries around the netherlands really that much poorer? many ppl who live in Ottawa (the closest big city to Quebec) which is less than 1 hour from Montreal, they actually just make monthly trips to Quebec and hoard a bounch of alcohol and never buy it in Ontario unless its at a bar or something. But here in Toronto its a 5-6 hour drive (more if bad traffic) so not worth it Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...
