Pakistani commuters drive past a pile of dog carcasses on the road side in Karachi on May 12.

The killing of hundreds of stray dogs in a government-organized cull in Karachi, Pakistan, is meeting with fury as images spread through social media.

Photos showing scores of dead dogs lined up along roads have led to protests from animal-rights groups and a storm of criticism of city authorities.

Officials quoted by Spain's Cadena SER say the cull is necessary because many of the animals have rabies, a virally borne disease that kills tens of thousands of people worldwide every year.

Pakistani authorities say around 150,000 people in Karachi were bitten by dogs in the past year and some 15-20 percent of them contracted rabies.

Karachi is Pakistan's largest city, with a population of more than 23 million people.

But animal-rights groups say the cull -- in which dogs are usually poisoned -- is inhumane. They argue that rabies can be reduced by vaccinating the canines and the large stray-dog population controlled through sterilization.

Karachi officials say such measures are too costly.

Twitter users expressed alarm at the dog killings, with some arguing that Pakistan's questionable record on human rights suggests there's not much hope for the humane treatment of animals.

This is beyond inhumane. If these dogs are really dangerous bc of rabies, why not just capture and inject them with anti-rabies? Or if these corrupt ppl can't afford that, why not just kill them in a less painful way? This is really vile! :eww:

Just because they can't speak, doesn't give these "humans" privilege to do something so cruel and heartless to them

Whilst it is cruel and absolutely disgusting, there is no treatment or cure for rabies, so anti-rabies is really only a vaccine for it, before symptoms develop. Dogs who are suspected of having the virus are euthanized. I just wished they did it differently

Burn them, inject them, kill the people who did this. HATE these people. Just because they aren't humans doesn't mean they can't feel pain and it doesn't mean they deserve this. Hope the people who did this choke and suffer. Vile excuses for human beings.

:rip: they are stray dogs. I don't see the problem with killing them. It's Karachi, Pakistan, this is not San Francisco. Don't apply Western values to some raggedy stray animals halfway around the world...

Oh, so we could kill homeless people too, because they don't a have house, right? That's just stupid and vile. They're still living creatures with the right to be alive just like everybody else.

I mean, this is absolutely terrible but in some areas of the world, stray dogs are a major issue

In the Western world where dogs are mostly cherished and animal control has a definite presence, strayness isn't much of a problem but in other areas where dogs are not as revered, the stray population can grow exponentially

That is not to say that there is not a humane way to treat the issue because there most certainly always is. I mean, lining dead dogs up on sides of roads is just absolutely sick and disgusting. That is not how a situation like this should be handled

Seriously, if at all possible, they could be spayed or neutered which is terrible in itself but how else will we curb this issue? If dogs are put in pounds, that would be just as bad as organizing them dead on the road, at least for me. Vaccination could also be an answer but then where will the money for vaccinations come from? They're not cheap and how will the dogs be kept track of? IDK

This is just an absolute mess of a dilemma

Very well put

Just because they are animals doesn't mean you have to be cruel to them

Sometimes I wonder who is the actual "human" and who is the "animal"

Now stray dogs are equal to homeless people? For some reason I don't think you'd be as upset if they were poisoning rats in Karachi :rip: the Pakistanis would probably laugh if they saw some of the comments coming from the USA.

How can you say that?

Every life is of equal importance

Nobody gave you the right to take away someone's life

Because they are rabid, they should be treated with care or isolated

Not killed mercilessly
