Why some Gaga lyrics sometimes seem "bad"

The song may be a bop but the lyrics...

She's a hit-or-miss songwriter. Many times, her lyrics just don't resonate with average listeners or her lyrics are just too weird for anyone to even want to decipher them. Most of the songs on ARTPOP failed to make connections with listeners.

"Walk down the runway but don't puke. It's okay. You just had a salad today." 

"Guy I'm romancing loves to hold you. I know you'll wear my make-up well."

"Rocket no. nine take off to the planet. Venus. Aphrodite lady, seashell bikini. Garden panty. Venus."

"I killed my former and left her in the trunk on highway ten. Put the knife under the hood. If you find it, send it straight to Hollywood."

These lyrics... It's like... who the **** cares? A very small population is going to relate to these on a personal level. As a fan, I could appreciate them more, but if I was just an average listener, I'd probably throw my copy of the album away.

The Donatella lyric is obviously intended to highlight the pressure of models and entertainers. ARTPOP had a big focus on pop culture so it makes Donatella more enjoyable when you look at it sarcastically. 

But you left out the cool part of that G.U.Y. lyrics? The fact that guy I'm romancing love stands for G.I.R.L..

The Aura lyric was obviously intended to go with the Telephone continuation so it doesn't seem as good if you don't look at it like that (so I guess your right about the average listener vs fan thing).

Gaga's lyrics have always been her weakness, even in (yes) Born This Way. Her ear for melodies and hooks is unparalleled. But she has a very unique, clunky way of expressing things lyrically that, for better or worse, is both a little frustrating but also distinctive and endearing.

People today listen to pop music for sonic pleasure and connection to lyrics. Gaga has mastered the musicality, but her lyrics have become increasingly confusing.

Metaphoric and creative lyrics are great, but pop music listeners don't want to pick through lyrics with a fine-tooth comb to extract a meaning.  They want something that will tell a story, evoke emotion, or connect with them immediately. Taylor Swift, Sam Smith, Tove Lo and Hozier all had HUGE smashes last year because their lyrics made an instant connection with someone. All of their hits had a deep meaning behind them, but their lyrics are flexible enough to relate to listeners on another level. That's what makes the difference between Tove Lo's "Habits" and Lady Gaga's "Mary Jane Holland," for example.
