The worst people are the kind who fight against themselves :wtf:

I applaud this woman, You do more to win over people in the middle by behaving with compassion and class, than acting like a hate-filled SJW.

Gay rights have advanced by appealing to values like compassion and freedom, and showing the other side to be the bullies. You you go after a small pizzeria, YOU become the bully in the eyes of many neutral folks.

Nobody seeing this story who wasn't going to discriminate or dislike gays already is suddenly going to change their minds after reading this. Even punishment or legal action isn't going to change people's minds, but it does send the message that this kind of discriminatory behavior is no longer acceptable, even if you still think that way in your own thoughts. I might agree with you if she was donating money to someone who simply said something ignorant, but this was a business who openly said they would discriminate, that's an entirely different ballpark and not a "liberty" we should be winning public brownie points over.

Take a moment to think of just flexibility, love, and trust~

how easy for you to express your opinion once someone else already did it for you. I have no reason to believe this is even what you think, you're just piggybacking off someone else's words. How very brave of you...

No, I just know that GGD isn't the place that my stance would be taken lightly. It's not just this topic that I have refrained from commenting on - there are quite a few. People on GGD are quick to jump and attack each other and that's not going to harbor any real conversation about these issues - it's just going to be loud voices over each other. I understand why people have the reaction that they're having - that's why I wasn't going to comment earlier as well. Nobody here is wrong in their thinking, it's just that sometimes the approach isn't the best. Yes, it may be wrong of the pizza place to take their stance, but it is still their right to take that stance in the same way you have the right to stand against it. When a group is oppressed it is only natural to turn to lashing out at those viewed as the oppressors - but when they lash out it just makes them angry and feel as though they were proven right in oppressing them to begin with. However, when someone expresses compassion as a way to combat the behavior it speaks greater volumes.

Peace can't be obtained through a cloud of more hate - it just adds more fuel to the fire. You'd don't have to agree with or even respect their beliefs, but you could at least respect them as people. Gay people receive hate and scrutiny constantly - it's not a good feeling. So why would throwing back hate and scrutiny help change anything?

I've been silent on this story for quite some time, but I think now is a good time to finally put in my two cents. Everyone is entitled to their own beliefs - even if they go against yours. You can't have good without evil - everything has its equal but opposite force, that's what gives us balance. Her quote her is very pivotal in showing why she chose to support their business.

“My girlfriend and I are small business owners, and we think there is a difference between operating in a public market space and then attaching the name of your business to a private event,” Hoffman said in a radio interview. “Like, if we were asked to set up at an anti-gay marriage rally, I mean, we would have to decline.”

You can't win by attacking someones beliefs - you win by turning them to your way of thinking on their own accord. By attacking and berating them they just see hate directed towards them and it reaffirms their decision - but by seeing people like this actually supporting them, than maybe they will view things in a different light.

Reach out with compassion - not with hate.

This makes absolutely no sense. Are you actually saying that we should ALLOW people to discriminate against others? We do not need to show "love and compassion", we do not need to prove anything. If someone preaches hate, we should not be silent and accept that views, "because they are entitled to it". If we respond with so called "love and compassion" we only send the message that their views and discrimination is okay. That it is acceptable. Good luck getting rid of homophobia that way.

Instead, we need to be loud when discrimination takes place. They must know that they are wrong! They must know that they need to change!

You don't need to be silent and accept their views - honestly, you don't even have to tolerate them - you just have to approach it in a way that wont feel threatening towards them. By being gentle and kind in your approach you can make more progress. Think about all the times you have had people act with aggression towards you in their words and how it made you feel. For example, let's say you worked really hard on a project and you were very proud of it, then someone just decides to trash you about it and insult it with no regards towards you and your feelings. Now think if they had gone and pointed out those same flaws but instead did it in a calm and friendly manner so that way you can use those comments to improve your work for the next project - you're more likely to take note of your mistakes and improve them if you are offered criticism in a positive way.

This woman has shown the business a positive side of the LGBT community that may not be common in the sea of hate mail they are receiving. It's hard to hate something that offers kindness - it's easy to hate something that offers anger.

The example given "if we were asked to set up at an anti gay marriage rally, we would have to turn down" just doesn't work. Of course it would be turned down, because it is a festival of hate. But when it comes down to turning people down because of petty things such as s-xuality, that's when the line is drawn.

Still think the entire thing is pathetic. You won't create support for minority groups by demanding respect from people who genuinely are opposed to giving it for whatever reason.

Boohoo for not getting a pizza when other people are hanged for even being gay. And don't even come to me trying to say the two are linked by a common thread because they surely aren't.

I, too, think of it this way. Which doesn't mean that we should all mechanically send love letters to this pizzeria, but showing respect for their way of living (which is as genuine as any other lifestyle no matter how opposed you are to it - don't make the same mistake of discrimination/intolerance!) surely must be a start to demand respect for your own.

If you truly will be more satisfied by people being forced to "support" (not even in a genuine way) the gay community out of fear for social discrimination or financial boycotting, you aren't any better than the common anti-gay activist. Maybe you're even inspired by their actions, since they're identical.
