Buddy no, it isn't. You don't get to strip away the historical connotations of a word to suit your needs. You don't get to tell a group of people that the word that was used to dehumanize them (for years and years and up until this day) is "just a word." It doesn't mean Bjork is racist, it just means she should have used better terminology in her description.

"Dehumanize" how is she dehumanising when she's talking about how essential the sound is to her. She's basically saying in a museum the sounds should be an essential element when right now it's unappreciated. She's relating it to black culture because black culture is in fact a culture that greatly influenced where we are today.

Inb4 "she still shouldn't have said that"

"If you define 'niggers' as someone whose lifestyle is defined by others, whose opportunities are defined by others, whose role in society are defined by others, then Good News! You don't have to be black to be a '******' in this society. Most of the people in America are 'niggers'. - Ron Dellums - Co-Founder and Chairman of The Congressional Black Caucus. US Congressman 1971-1998. Currently Mayor of Oakland, CA.

Just some food for thought.

Nope I didn't say she dehumanized anyone. I said the word has been used in the past to and still is used to do so. You don't get to re-appropriate a word with these connotations to make a kick-ass metaphor.

Bjork is obviously not racist person, many of her collaborators are black or from ethnic backgrounds since the very start of her career.

She is using the word to get a point across.

She wasn't referring to a person though, so someones race is not really the issue here, she's referring to a medium, one she uses to make her art, one that is completely under appreciated.

Once again, I'm not one of the people saying she is racist. I bet she isn't. But she does not have the right to use that word to fit her metaphor. Well, she does technically "have the right" but she should be prepared to deal with the consequences of using such language. It doesn't feel in good taste.
