Why, that idea is as far-fetched as AC/DC and Steely Dan performing at Coachella! Or not. Because, as you may recall, AC/DC and Steely Dan are performing at the 2015 edition of the Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival, which takes place Friday through Sunday in Indio, then holds its second weekend (also sold-out) April 19-21. Twenty percent of the nearly 97,000 fans who attended each day of last year's two-weekend festival are from San Diego County, according to the festival' promoters, Goldenvoice In February, shortly after her Super Bowl XLIX halftime show performance in Arizona, Perry told Associated Press: "I would love to (perform at Coachella) because it would feel so full circle. I've gone so many years and seen all the acts. We'll see. It's probably going to be about the type of record I make, or it would be when I would (make a) come back at 45, maybe." At the time, Top 40 teen-pop queen Perry's Coachella hopes seems like, well, a teenage dream at best. But in an interview this weekend with the Palm Springs-based The Desert Sun newspaper, Coachella mastermind Paul Tollett was quick not to rule out the possibility of a Perry performance at the festival sometime in the future. Tollett is the CEO and president of Goldenvoice, which owns a controlling interest in San Diego's Valley View Casino Center. he is also a board member of Goldenvoice's parent company, AEG Live, which is exclusively producing Perry's ongoing Prismatic World Tour "We love her," Tollett said of Perry, a regular Coachella attendee. "We promoted her tour. In fact, we have her in Asia right now. She's waiting for Coachella. She once reminded us that she won't book a tour that's (at the same time as) Coachella because she wants to come here. That's kind of cool." As for Groban, the top-selling pop-classical crossover vocal star, Tollett told The Desert Sun: "I walked the (Coachella) grounds with Josh Groban about 10 years ago. I saw him backstage and I introduced myself and we walked around. I was surprised by how many (Coachella) artists he knew about. I told him: 'We should have a (indoor, soundproofed performance) structure at this (festival) where someone like you could perform.' There would be people who would be into it. I know if we had him, volume (from other bands) would really be a problem. But, I think this crowd is so open-minded, it's not funny. Sometimes we're held back by the facilities that we provide." Of course, none of this means Coachella attendees this year should hold their breath waiting to see Groban or Perry hop on stage to sing "Highway to Hell" with AC/DC, or "Black Friday" with Steely Dan (which, frankly, is something we'd like to see ourselves). But an indoor venue for softer music would be a welcome addition to Coachella, just as it was when San Diego's sadly defunct Street Scene festival added the intimate Horton Grand Theater to its array of outdoor stages back in the 1990s. As for Perry, if Coachella is going to continue to jump the shark by booking unlikely acts, why not book someone whose act includes (well, at least it did at the Super Bowl) people dressed as dancing sharks?
