I think Jay Z and the others are taking this way too seriously, it's not revolutionary, the only reason people are talking about it is because of the amount of famous artists in one room and the mystery of what is going on.

It's gonna be a non event very soon, unfortunately Jay Z et al do not control the music industry as much as they think they do

Some of ya'll are borderline stupid and dont even bother to read the posts already made. There are two subscriptions. One is the normal $10 just like Spotify premium. That will be the one most of you will worry about. Yeah its the same price as spotify but the artists are still paid more per stream.

Its not about millionaires making more money. Its about ARTISTS getting paid what they deserve for their ART. Everyone of those people on that stage started off as one of us. They worked hard to get to where they are and Spotify was taking advantage of many of them.

Can you please enlighten us about how much percentage of every stream is Tidal going to give to the real artist?

Those artists become the new "owners" of music, then the new artists will be back in the same position again. I like the concept though, competition is good when it comes to making sure everybody gets what they deserve. Spotify is not compensating artists enough.

Just very excited about a platform that is beneficial for a lot of artists, not just the big names that are co-owners/supporters. Don't see how anyone could be all for Spotify and against Tidal. Really just can't.

I'm not for Spotify. I repeatedly said that Taylor was right for pulling her music, and starting the discussion in the mainstream media, and I hoped others would follow suit. Now, if this ne service does indeed end up putting more money into the artists' pockets, especially the writers and smaller artists, it will have been a worthy venture. At this point, especially with Apple still coming with their new streaming service, there isn't any cold hard receipts to back up anyone's claims yet.

I'm going to wait to make grand sweeping statements until we see how this all plays out. Right now, it's all a lot of big talk and hot air, tbh. :)

We aren't completely sure but we are going by what the ARTISTS are saying. I mean they have to be getting more if Taylor is allowing her music on this one and not Spotify.

How are you even comparing these two when you don't know the percentage of royalities Tidal is going to give to the artists? You are blindly supporting this project. There is no information about royalities at all.

Musicians including Beyoncé and Madonna show support for rapper as he overhauls service designed to make ‘more money for the artist’

"People are not respecting the music, and devaluing what it really means," Jay Z told Billboard. "People really feel like music is free, but will pay $6 for water. You can drink water free out of the tap and it's good water. But they're okay paying for it. It's just the mindset right now."

Details will follow, but it's been confirmed, in both's Jay Z's quotes as well as the full press release that artists will make more PROFIT and have more creative CONTROL. All artists featured on Tidal, not just the co-owners. So that also includes Gaga.

I dont think writers get paid continuously do they? I thought they just get paid once they hand over a song and thats the end of it

It depends on the contract :) It is usually a combination of both.

Id be fine with this if they announced how much more artists will make per listen versus Spotify. It just seems so fishy...

and Apple is making one too, all these are going to cannibalize each other.

Well then it's just a supposition not a fact. No one knows if the artists are going to make more money out of this. These artists did nothing but be there and talk some random stuff.

The % of revenue from streams going to the artist really isn't going to matter if people don't use Tidal. And what is Tidal's main distinguishing feature from its competitors? Lossless quality. That's great for Audiophiles who have the mobile speeds and data plans to be able to use a lossless streaming service, but that's a very small market, so the money artists get from Tidal streams are going to be nothing compared to the money they get from Spotify, even if they're getting lower % per stream.

That's what i'm thinking about all of this. I'm not going to just automatically believe a bunch of artists who have vested interests in a company.

It may end up being better for all the smaller artists out there...it may not. Even if that's the case, the truth is people like their money. They are going to try and get the best value for their money and the large majority of consumers aren't going to spend more of their personal money, to make artists more money. If it ends up being a better service overall, for the same amount of money people are already spending, then it has a chance of succeeding. That's really the bottom line.

Details are coming out as we're all typing, hold on... It's confirmed that it's more than Spotify. That's for sure. How much depends on the artist's deal with their label and their distribution deals. So it depends on loads of things.

Meanwhile...

Ok but the point of my post is what are ya'll getting heated about. It costs just as much as Spotify. No one is forcing you to get it. But its nothing to get upset over. And then people keep spreading around this $20 dollar mess like thats the only option. What's really upsetting is the "richer getting richer" comments, cause thats not how it is at all. And if we were in there shoes we'd have a different stance.

That's still nothing. We can have a serious discussion about how artists are going to make more money out of this after details are released but right now every argument is based on assumptions.
