Wolf 1,328
I'm grateful gaga ditched troy. Ever since she's done that, great things started to pave her way. Good promo does wonders tbh. Hands down to bobby It's only a matter of time before she's fully back on track.

Dex 117
Reasons ARTPOP didn't do well with the mainstream:1-It's called ARTPOP: This sounds like a forced "2arty4u" title and it just doesn't work. Thousands of casual fans instantly alienated. 2-Applause: A song where you can barely distinguish the lyrics let alone relate to them. A narcissistic song about her fame. The Fame was about pop culture and the public's obsession with fame which is what made it so good. Applause is a "I'm so arty and now I'm famous" realisation. Again, alienating.3-R Kelly: The only reason IMO he was on this album was because he was due to release his own. His people knew her people and he was shoved on at the last minute. She's not usually open to associating with controversy (ie Azealia) unless it's her own, why would she work with him of all people? "King of RnB" my ass.4-Venus: The most Gaga-esque song, pitted by many to be the Bad Romance, was shoved to the side including its video. It should have been the lead single.5-G.U.Y.: I don't recall there ever being any significant promo except the 8 minute long video that has since been forgotten. Especially watching the G.U.Y.-only version, the directing is poor and the themes are forced. Also the acronym G-U-Y is forced.6-Gypsy: A good pop song with mainstream potential, was ignored. By the time speculation had begun over whether it was going to be a single or not, its style and genre was already outdated.7-Too long in production: See above. Too much BTW rejects. She brought dance pop back in 2009 and his since not moved on whilst everybody else who copied her has.8-Dope: Went from a really sweet and sincere belty ballad to.. Dope. It's terrible and she sings like an old man in it. If you ask me she was coaxed into changing it.Next era needs to be humble. If she wants to be "experimental", she needs to commit to it. FKA Twigs is a good example of experimental music with strong visuals and a respectable sized fanbase.
Dorothy Gale 7,575
No! IT underperformed because People are sick of Gaga I think this, sadly, is the reason why. Unlike her peers in the pop world, Gaga's fanbase is mostly made of stans. Katy, Beyoncé, Adele, etc. have mostly casual fans.
Dexxx 1,393
Well, we really don't know what happened between Gaga and Troy. And too bad for ARTPOP, it happened all that mess and misunderstandings on that era. So we really don't have to blame the album. Miel 15,009
While I do think the quality of the music wasn't as great as I thought it could have been (still really enjoy it), I do think a lot of what contributed to its "underperformance" were extraneous factors, particularly stigmatization of the album itself and of Gaga's name, awkward management, and it all probably leading Gaga to a bad place emotionally/mentally. 3 points in and ready for more
gagzus 15,992
actually to settle this; did you like the music?yes- good, then stfu & listen to it and enjoy itno- good, the stfu and go back to listening to The Fame Monster who honestly cares, as long as we enjoy it or don't listen to it much if we don't. this all only started bc of the competition between our fanbase & katy's bc of the media. Phoenix 17,395
Same thoughts as you. I still remember how everyone loved the album when it leaked. Everyone, even the stans of other artists. And when the first week sales went out they started finding flaws. And now they act like music critics, the album is amazing musically. Promo was the biggest reason for it's underperforming. 💎
SlaeUrAnus 15,976
Some of us disliked the production on some of the songs on ARTPOP. End of. Everyone has an opinion. In my messy era.
ARTPOPchamp 292
The songs & production on ARTPOP are not the reason why it "underperformed" commercially.Troy setting up the ARTPOP promo schedule in way that would f*ck Gaga over completely (aka DWUW video), and hurting her so badly that she almost was on the edge of SUICIDE and Gaga therefore retreating from mainstream media to get herself back on her feet, is why ARTPOP did not do as well as her previous albums.I'm sick of you blaming the producers and songwriters. ARTPOP is a great album, with impeccable production.EDIT: Since 50% of you are kind of still don't get it: The mere reason why ARTPOP "flopped" is Troy Carter. Not Gaga. Not Madeon. Not Zedd. Not DJ White Shadow. It's Troy Carter. Please refrain from adding your stupid "She messed the era up" comments, I am having none of it.But it is the producers who didn't put the proper time and effort into the music, Madeon has admitted to this. A lot of the producers LG worked with on ARTPOP were working on their own projects and singles for other people while doing songs for ARTPOP. I think people should stop blaming "poor promo" for the poor reception of the album. I've never said LG messed up the era, but I feel she was kind of too exhausted to put the same amount of effort into the song production as the past 3 albums so she let the producers like Zedd and Madeon and DJWS take the reigns. She let them have more control in the musical direction than previously. In Born This Way, she was heavily involved in the production, but no so much with ARTPOP due to exhaustion, healing from broken hip and emotional stress. LG had a different vision of ARTPOP's sound but it didn't come to fruition because she was too exhausted and label execs kind of forced her to work with Zedd. And Zedd's success of Clarity heavily influenced what happened with ARTPOP. AND LG was rushed to change ARTPOP and create the music videos - LG was given a couple weeks to come up with an idea for APPLAUSE, and for DO WHAT U WANT, the video concept was thought of in a week, LG thought Venus would be the single and had a vision for the video and that changed when DWUW was chosen as a single due to its quick success. Leaving LG to rush the creative process and come up with something on the spot for the video. It comes down to time and exhaustion that contributed to the ARTPOP poor performance... and people also need to factor in what was going on in music at the time, with the oversaturation of the edm sound and people trying to imitate LG. People were craving something different, they wanted something that sounded different instead, it was a similar sound. It's why people like Sam Smith and other people like him blew up, he had a new fresh sound when everyone was doing pop and dance and edm.
