Are Gaga's piano ballads becoming formulaic?

On The Fame, we had dance/pop tracks with Brown Eyes being more acoustic/ballad-esque, or at least performed that way.

Then Speechless was featured on The Fame Monster, and was surrounded mainly by electro pop/gothic pop-infused music.

On Born This Way, Yoü and I was made somewhat country, but it was an acoustic song when we were first introduced to it.

And then on ARTPOP, we got Dope, which received somewhat lukewarm reception from fans compared to previous ballads. I think at this point it became predictable. Do you think this trend should continue?

I don't understand how that makes them "formulaic." I don't think that's the word you're looking for.

Yeah, I think each ballad is very unique in its way and each brings different feelings.

Yes and I love that she "tones it down" on one song from every album.

Speechless, Y&I and Dope are some of her best. In fact I think ballads are what Gaga is best at

She did a piano version of Applause though which was one of its best performances in my opinion  Same with Do What U Want :flutter: I don't think it's formulaic at all because she's done different songs in different ways - like how she did ARTPOP too, as in starting off with the piano then going into the studio version :music:

formulaic in the sense that she includes a ballad in every album or what?

I'm talking about how each pop album has a piano track. It's almost a given at this point. It's predictable for her fans, and it sort of feels like she's trying to show a different side to casual listeners.

I think you phrased it wrong. Her albums are becoming formulatic in that sense but no the ballads themselves. I agree with you.

No more predictable than having the other 99% of the album being an electronic dance track.

Her piano ballads are always an album highlight imo. I mean, she writes most of her songs from the piano anyway and often performs live versions of other songs at the piano.

I think it serves a few functions, it provides a change in mood during the progression of an album, fans of her piano performances and songs have a song for them, it allows her to have a break during performing where she can sit down at her piano to perform (which has consistently been considered the highlight of the show by countless reviewers for every single tour she has done) and I think it feels more natural for her to sit at the piano and sing.

She hasn't been a dancer her entire life. She is a singer/songwriter who has played the piano her entire life. It's her main strength and she knows it.

Yes, this is true. But maybe for the next album Gaga could do 3 piano songs? Or none? Just to keep it fresh.

I think the next album should be all piano songs and ballads :teehee:

Um, she is an artist who plays the piano...very well! What else do you expect? A ballad with a strumming guitar? If she does a ballad, it is going to be a piano ballad.

Sorry, but I don't get the question.

Yes, but having one per album is becoming a formula.

From the ARTPOP era I definitely agree :worship:

Ohhh I see! Sorry for misunderstanding, it's late :flop: In that case, yeah I guess it is almost a given and pretty predictable. I'm not sure if she's trying to show a different side to herself or prove anything though, because I genuinely believe she enjoys her piano ballads and would do them regardless
